High-Res XPS 1330

260 points posted to XPS products by zero79 Feb 17

The 1280x800 resolution on the XPS 1330 is a bit low. It would be great if this laptop came in a 1400x900 flavor, or even better in 1650x1050.

It's a 13 inch screen for crying out loud, you shouldn't need a manifying glass to read it

I'm going to have to demote this. I have a 12 inch laptop @ 1280 x 800. I can't imagine going smaller than that. Personally I'd never buy a 12 or 13 inch laptop with a 1400 x 900 screen. I gotta echo Lugo02. It'd be too little for me.

As far as I know 1280x800 is the best that you can do for 12.1" and 13.3" inch screens. For 1440x900, a 14.1" screen is usually used. For 1680x1050, a 15.4" screen is used. For 1920x1200, a 17" screen is used.

New Thinkpad X300 has a 13.3 LED backlit panel that offers WXGA+ (1440x900) resolution, so why not? If you don't need extra resolution is ok, it's an option. I don't know why a person can demote this because for me this would be the difference between buying M1330 or X300.

That's why you can change the DPI in the OS, Higher resolution = better image.

Um, while you can turn down the resolution in the OS, and LCD display always looks its best at its native resolution. Anything other than native compromises the image quality.

champ, I know you can turn down the resolution. That's not what I'm refering to. I'm refering to adjusting the DPI. Under Vista, open Control Panel and search for DPI. It's under Personalization. You can increase the DPI from the default of 96 to 120, making text more readable. You can also do this under XP but I don't remember the exact location.

Increasing the DPI sometime cause menu text to clip, so that is not always a good solution. examp instead of seeing the full work CLIPPING ona button, you may only see CLIPPIN

Excellent Idea: In fact, it is the only thing that prevent me from ordering an M1330 right now. Some colleagues are also waiting exactly for this, and considering the Lenovo X300 for this reason only. The minute 1440X900 is offered on M1330, there will be at least 2 order....except if we order lenovo before.
BTW our use for a high DPI display is coding and CAE on the move: it is much more confortable to code on a screen with a lot of space for multiple windows, and a screen in the 12-13.5 inches range is good for portability, bigger and it become difficult to open in a plane. DPI is not a problem, 1440x900 is a high resolution on a 13.3 screen, but not too high. I have a VGA PDA with a 3.5 inches screen, so I am well used to high DPI: translated to 13.3, it would be more than 1600X1200!
So 1440X900 will be nice and perfectly usable, in fact I would find even 1600X1080 on a 13.3 screen useful, although I guess I would be the exception on that: this would probably be overkill for most, but for me the higher resolution the better, up to 200 DPI...

"even better in 1650x1050"

What are you talking about?? I see that 1440x900 can be offered on 13.3" screens, but 1680x1050? No way, that is probably available only on 15.4"+ screens.

Indeed, it [1680x1050] is not available yet, and 1440x900 would be a nice improvement already, one that I would be very happy with and that would make me order the M1330 immediately.
However, technically, I do not see why a 1680x1050 13.3 inches panel would be impossible nor crazy: Dell offer 15.4 screen with a 1920x1200 resolution, which is almost exactly the same DPI as a 1680x1050 13.3 inches panel. If such a DPI exist and is proposed in 15.4 inches panels, why not on 13.3 inches? This is more long term/mid-term though, right now 1440x900 is needed...needed bad...;)

i'm currently owning an latitude d820 which has a 15.4" screen with 1920x1200 resolution - it's perfect for my opinion (i even use it with ~82 dpi setting in gnome)
i now got the xps m1330 for testing purposes and i'd really appreciate it if there would be a panel with AT LEAST 1440x900 for this notebook....
as many others have already mentioned, if there can be 15,4" with 1920x1200 (which means about 147 DPI) and 12.1" with 1400x1050 (which is also about 145 DPI) why could there be no 13.3" with 1440x900 (which would be ~128DPI)

Anymore news on this?

I'd kill for this too. 1280x800 is not enough real estate for real work. I have to connect an external monitor to do any real work

Concur with the WXGA+ screen option rather than WXGA only option (in the UK). Currently that would clinch the XPS 1330 as a great machine to buy rather than a possibility
