Graphics Cards + Screen Resolutions + RAM = The "Sweet Spot"

210 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops by stufitexpander Mar 5

I'm amalgamating a lot of other peoples' ideas here, but this is what I needed in a laptop and Dell didn't have it:

1)1680X1050 15.4in Matte Screen
2)Reasonably quick gaming graphics card (8600M or faster)
3) XP Pro
4) 3 Gigs of RAM (4 is overkill for me with 32-bit XP Pro)
5) Less than 1500 dollars with warranty included

People have posted all of these ideas seperately, but really, its all of them together which makes a computer worth buying for me, and I feel like, lot of other people, too. We all come on and vote for 1-5 in this list, but that doesn't mean Dell knows we want 1-5 in ONE computer.

My computer is used primarily for work; I'm a programmer (of sorts)/researcher/excel user who likes to play the occasional well reviewed game. I feel like there are a lot of people like me.

I don't mean to be rude, but Dell should take a look at www.powernotebooks.com if they think it can't be done. That kind of selection is more what I would call "customizing".

What ever happened to economies of scale?

I've been looking for something similiar for myself. The closest I can get is the Dell XPS 1530 with the 1680x1050 display, 3GB memory, and a 8600M GT.. this is like $1350 ish but it comes with VISTA. I would reimage the machine but I have concerned about XP video driver support. I've googled a few sites that promote usable drivers but I'm wondering if anyone out there has any experiences that they could share on reimaging this notebook with XP.

Thats a glossy 1680X1050 with the 256 8600M GT, right?
I know I'm starting to sound repetitive/whiny, but I just can't buy a computer with a glossy display, and I really can't understand why they have to scrape by with the 256MB version of the 8600M.

XP video driver support for the 8600M GT comes in the form of the nvidia drivers version num: 6.14.11.5610, and I can say, running XP on these drivers, that everything works just fine. Like F.E.A.R. at 40 fps on max/cpu max/gpu 1024x768 fine.

This is definitely along the lines of what I would like. Except, I'd want to be able to upgrade to an 8800M like the m15x and I'd totally pay $2099 for that, though. (including 3yr warrantee w/ coverage for accidental damage)
