Proper/decent Bios for flagship XPS 720 desktop (e.g. A06)

590 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, XPS products by huggy_bear Mar 19

Plz provide a proper/decent Bios to the XPS 720.
Latest revision (A05) apparently fixes some of the issues reported by customers but there are many more remaining, e.g.:
1) official/proper support for Quad-core Penryn-family CPUs (i.e. Yorkfield Q9450, Q9550 and QX9650).
2) proper support for EPP SLI memory (e.g. reportedly only a few brands/models currently supported...).
3) overclocking options in the Bios to let "advanced users" tweak the FSB, memory clock ratio, voltages, etc...

I'd love to see proper bios for Yorkfield quads

Updated BIOS supporting the Yorkie Quads is needed right away. As Huggy_Bear reported on Rampant Speculation, the QX9650 DOES work with the XPS720 680i SLI motherboard with some hiccups.

This would redefine customer service for XPS owners (something Dell is in desperate need of doing).

Very good idea. I would love to have a non-neutered BIOS.

Like others would love to see a "real" bios for the 720.

"Epp is supported but sli memory not" thats what the XPS 270 specs say, but if you goto Nvidia memory support site it lists the memories that can be used by the XPS 720 and Corsair website lists most of their ddr2 as being suitable for XPS 720 (don't know how the memory fan is going to find a power connector) but on the whole a little contradictory information about memory is floating around. Nvidia 9800 GXT cards may not run as they require a 1x6pin and 1x8pin connectors some sort of adapter is going to be necessary. DELL IT'S INEVITABLE MOVE INTO A STANDARD ATX SETUP AND OFFER COMPONENT SALES PLENTY OF OTHER COMPANIES SELL COMPONENTS SUCESSFULLY. XPS 720 CUSTOMERS THAT ENDED UP WITH LEGACY SYSTEMS NEED TO BE OFFERED A WAY TO UPGRADE TO A NEWER STANDARD SYSTEM. ALL GAMING SYSTEMS HAVE TO BE FULLY UPGRADEABLE AND IF YOUR STAFF ATTEMPT TO PUT A STOP TO THIS THEY NEED TO BE GIVEN THE FLICK.

I just put a Q9450 in my XPS 720... Computer boots fine and goes into window, but the fans go into highest speed and the things sounds like its about to have a nuclear meltdown! Dell, if you guys can fix this it would be a great update for your loyal customers that have paid premium $$$ for owning the flagship product int the XPS line....

I just got an XPS 720 the seller person told me that it will support the Q9550. I will have to send the PC back unless Dell answer to this in a timely manner.
Give this nice piece of equipment a decent BIOS.
I really could not believe my eyes when I saw such a crippled BIOS. Who writes that code for Dell? .................rant off.

Was disappointed once again by Dell...
This is BIOS topic in XPS series which is the most expensive for consumer model of Dell... XPS 720 and H2C.
Please talk about the reason why A06 BIOS does not support "INTEL EXTREME EDITION PROCESSOR QX9650"!
When QX9650 works in XPS 720, is NEW XPS 730 hard to be sold?
Dell's thought is too ridiculous, method of Dell makes too much fool of customer.
