9800 GX2 (and offer SLi)

470 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming, XPS products by zanlok Mar 22

It has been released. The benchmarks are in. This is the new king. Alienware is offering it. Let's see an XPS 740 or XPS 840 that offers this card.

And allow ultra-enthusiasts to get quad-SLi. Even Alienware hasn't done this yet, even though the initial SLi drivers are released for testing.

256 stream processors, 1GB RAM, and a fillrate of 76.8 billion/sec. Wow!!

Great idea, but not so fast with the SLI, nvidia still havnt released proper Quad SLI drivers for this card.

Well, some people out there are testing it this week, so Nvidia is definitely working on it.

3-way SLi (6x) would be nice, too.
Some motherboards already support this feature for this type of card.

For now, offer this NVidia graphics card on the XPS 720!

Can't be offered on XPS 720 requires 1x6 pin and 1x8pin the XPS 720 has 2x6pin. Themaltake psu's offer an adapter plug for the 6pin to 8 pin, DELL would need to offer an adapter plug. I believe BFG cards offer some sort of adapter but there is little information on whether it will fit a DELL PSU molex. No other manufacturer is offering adapter's I think the cards makers expect PSU manufacturers to offer one.
This is yet another example of NVidia "electric drilling" (can't use the words I want) it's customers, It's a bad habit they are getting into. I can't understand why they just don't build it in a 2x6 pin since they can use a 6pin to 8pin adapter!

well dell could do that if they wanted to get this card supported in their models. and zanlok, i think Quad-SLI is good enough at this time, by about two years nvidia would have released another/better graphics card...

3-way SLi is the only way to go if you actually want to play the games currently out there at full features. For example, noone could play Crysis on Very High detail when the game first came out. With a 9800 GX2 in 3-way SLi, though, when the next great DX10 game comes out (take your pick), you'd always be afforded that luxury :)

yeah, but you can play it now on Very High with 2 9800GX2s. and the cards arnt built for 3-way SLI, so if nvidia wanted to introduce it to the card it would have to be via the motherboard... but not bad, i just 2 of them myself, they ROCK!!! XD

xfx has a mobo that should support 3-way for the 9800 GX2
once the drivers work; quad-SLi is working now, btw

yes, it does work but doesnt get the cards to release their full potential... their not fully supported.

True, but it gets your *system* to new heights of all-at-once detail possibilities :)
