Four Hard Drives Please (Option)

290 points posted to Desktops, Sales Strategies, Servers and Storage by lukemcurley Apr 1

Currently Dell consumer desktops are limited to two hard drives, can you please, especially for high end consumer/gaming desktops, enable up to four hard drive slots, with four SATA ports on the motherboard too so that the option is there. This is great for expansion of disk space either when purchased or later.

Also if you can offer SATA dvd/blu-ray drives it would be great.

I think RAID 5 with 3 drives and a hot spare would be GREAT (4 drives total)

(or would that be Raid 6???)

nope... just checked. Raid 6 = dual parity, with recovery from simultaneous failure of 2 drives... I like the hot spare better!

But, I'd also prefer that desktops have dual, hot-swappable power supplies and hot-swappable RAID 5 disks!

Increasing the number of SATA ports on the motherboard to four is needed and slowly phase out IDE. DVD-R and Blu-Ray drives are now available on the faster SATA. This is a much better solution for drives in the future.

I don't expect Dell to offer this on your consumer line of desktops but it is needed on the entire XPS desptop line.
