Useful USB Ports

260 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops by jshereshewsky Apr 9

I have a number of devices connected to my desktop via USB cords; web cam, mike, back-up discs, PDA, printer(s), etc. etc. Although my current DELL desktop has two USB ports on the front, most are from the rear, which is an area that is difficult to access. Can't you build a desktop machine with an expandable number of USB ports (powered) that connect from the front of the machine?

Just buy a powered USB hub. Viola. That's the point of USB.. "serial" chaining of devices. You can totally chain about as much as you through just one port. Except, of course, for the devices that need to actually use the 5V of electricity.. hence the need for a powered hub. And, I wouldn't expect the performance of two USB hard drives connected through the same port to be good, but "don't do that". Otherwise, I've used a hub for years.. works great :)

I think he asking for th option to specify how many front USB ports are on the computer with 2 being the minimum.

yeah my desktop, although not a dell has 4 in the rear, 2 on teh side just by teh front, as well as a firewire at the front.. you could custom build a case.. a much easier option would be for dell to expand the number of cases that they offer? there are a number out there that offer several ports at the front or even on teh top of the case (via an opening door).... thoughts?

random question: is it even possible to have ENOUGH usb ports? i'm sure there's plenty of outdated/useless ports (in my case, the media card reader) that would have better use as a usb port. maybe put an option to swap out the media card reader with usb ports, and have an option to buy a usb memory card reader

but: since you can totally chain them.. 2 should be fine, right?

2 would work, but i wouldn't want to carry around a usb hub all the time. so really it should be 6
