Unlock Sound Card Features on Inspiron Laptops

490 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products by tigerforce Apr 13

The sound card on the Dell E1705 (and probably most recent Inspiron laptop can support all of these features http://www.sigmatel.com/products/pcaudio/notebook/stac9200.aspx but they have all been locked out of the software driver that Dell gives us customers. Additionally their are no ASIO drivers available from Dell and I really need this for my recording projects. Having the other features like setting both my audio jacks to outputs, manually setting sample rates and latency, and virtual surround sound would be soooooo Cool!
Now before you start calling Dell names, let me defend them by saying that they probably thought that your Mom might accidentally wreck her laptop after she messed up her audio settings and then blame Dell. But...
at least put the download on http://www.support.dell.com so all the audiophiles out their can get what we payed for. Dell, you don't have to
make anything new just unlock what already there. Please :) Oh and if you want more info check here (though i don't necessarily recommend this approach) http://www.notebookforums.com/thread169312.html

PS: Thanks for Idea Storm Dell!

I'm really beginning to find IdeaStorm quite a disturbing place. It's like a bad dream where we're all condemned to live by "mom & pops" IQ barrier for all eternity. I really don't mean anybody to take this the wrong way. But are Americans really so stupid? Where does this "mom & pop" mentality come from? Why does everybody seem to be living their lives according to what "mom & pop" can comprehend? Move out of the basement and live your own lives.

As for Dell. If you really expect to do business with the rest of the world the way you seem to be doing business with American consumers then you don't even deserve to be in second place. The rest of the world just doesn't think like this.

PS: I would also like MIDI in to be enabled. Currently only MIDI out is detected (for playback) so i cannot connect my MIDI keyboard through USB :( I had to buy a separate MIDI card/cable if anyone else has had this problem here is the cable i got http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Uno-main.html but it sure would be nice if dell could fix this too so all I would need was my USB cable once again :)

I would like to clarify something, Dell has not locked out ALL the features of their sound cards. Obviously they can make noise etc. but all advanced features are gone. For example, here is what the fully unlocked driver control panel looks like http://www.tkopro.com/pics/SigmaTelCP.jpg check out the locked out panel Dell gave you and the only option available is "Allow Reconfiguration Pop-Ups" and I'm not 100% sure that this works either :( Also for those wondering what ASIO is, ASIO is a type of driver that virtually eliminates latency (or delay) which is vital for pro recording (if your not recording don't worry you are fine and ASIO won't make playback sound any better). Most media players don't support it anyway. I really need the ASIO driver though. Thanks Again and please promote, maybe something will happen :) if you have ? feel free to ask (I may not answser though :)
