Give us real bios control

540 points posted to Desktops and Laptops by retro Apr 21

Give us all full control of our hardware, I hate entering a bios and seeing only the most basic settings and not much of them, I may get some faster ram and want to set the cas or i may want to adjust my hard drive settings.

I agree. Many of us know what we're doing in this department, and want more full control over the piece of machinery we buy.

The average consumer dosen`t have that knowledge or ability. How will Dell differentiate between the buyers.

I agree. Promoted.

Sugarbear: the average consumer shouldn't wonder in the BIOS in the first place. Also every BIOS has a SAFE or DEFAULT setting that should recover any "wrongdoings".

Also, the average consumer doesn't even know how to get into the BIOS, or even know what it is, even though it says how to get in when you boot up your computer. Most people just don't pay attention to that.

NOT TO EVERYONE!!!! i could see some grandmas accidentally frying their machines because they accidentally overclocked it too much. so the way to do this would be to put all the advanced stuff in a menu with a warning that says "changing stuff in here can fry your machine"

just search ideastorm for coreboot. formally known as linuxbios, it's a free (gpl'd) bios that gives you speed, control, and freedom all in one.

As far as i can see there is no support for my chipset and while i love to mod anything that can be i dont want a new bios i just want mine but unlocked, plus i can see ppl bricking there kit or in my case a laptop messing with that it would have been worth a mess if i could have seen any ati chipset at all in the list of supported hardware.

If you want more BIOS control build your own PC, I would hate to have to mess with advanced BIOS settings that someone has accidentally messed up.... That kind of BIOS functionality is not worth the risk of frying hardware for most users... Plus it keeps Dells costs down because they have a blanket BIOS that doesn't need a lot of tweaking from PC to PC, on top of that they don't have to replace users hardware under warranty because someone though that they were going to over clock or something, plus the stock cooling in desktops are just not up to the challenge like some of the expensive off the shelf cooling options out there to make that idea feesable.

what are you blabbing on about i don't want to over clock my cpu i want to enable ahci so i can use my sata hard drive as it should be, Other than windows using ide emulation, If dell are scared of people messing with it and killing something, Then bios modifications should be exempt from the warranty, The only people modifying the bios are people who know why they entered and what there doing to it, I do build my own pc's but i buy my own laptops from dell rather then buy a bare bones kit, Its cheaper why pay more for something that should be part of any pc. If I would hate to have to mess with advanced BIOS settings that someone has accidentally messed up, Then i would simply reset to defaults. One last thing, Someone with a dell desktop could do a bit of clocking, I upgraded a graphics card in a dell desktop for someone and was impressed with the cooling system i saw.

My dimension 9100 with ATI Radeon 256 mg is overclocked, and running fairly cool. I have no complaints after overclocking her.
