Dummy Laptop for a high end cpu/computer

-60 points posted to Laptops by c_v_nag May 10

DummyLaptop = Laptop With Only (Monitor [17" min] + Keyboard + Mouse + Speaker + Mic + VideoCam)

I like my computers. I have a 2 high end quadpro computers loaded with various hardware and software.

But i want to move around, maybe sleep on a couch and i dont like to sit at one place. I just want a DummyLaptop (defined above) which could be just plugged in to any computer. I could use that at any place like my office, home, at a friend's place, or even at a public booth with just a CPU...

So just by a cheap UMPC like the eee or Wind (by MSI) or wait a little to the Dell's coming UMPC made by Aleinware.

What you're really talking about is a thin client: implementation details are probably an issue here (how to make it usable, reliable, compatible, and all those other -ibles).

Why don't you just set up remote access to the desktops of the PCs you want to connect to?

....a completely web dependent portable thin client? Interesting. But the 17 inch screen kind of defeats the portability theme, no?

Nice way to build reliance on web desktops, eh?

A small Linux installation, embedded, with no hard drive and 100% reliance on wireless connectivity with zero hard ports except for power.....

Interesting.

.....sounds like a mobile version of the i-opener internet appliance circa 2000-2001..... we all know how that went......LOL!

This suggestion goes beyond Thin Client approaches - I think his concept is that of a wireless keyboard and display, with a battery. And that's it. No fluff, no ports [but possibly a wireless USB hub could be added?], no OS, no hassle.

If Nintendo can make wiimotes and balance boards and wireless senor bars work without using wires on something as underpowered as the wii, surely this is possible.

Wireless keyboards are common as muck, laptop displays are hardly rare, batteries grow on trees and we have wireless VGA solutions like http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/19/the-wireless-vga-extender-eliminates-some-... so surely it's not beyond the realms of possibility to put them all together in a laptop chassis?

chopdoc HP already offer portable thin clients. Dell are lagging in that arena.
