Just the same CPU!

230 points posted to Sales Strategies by sautiller May 11

At Dell Taiwan, the default CPU for Inspiron and XPS laptops is Intel T8300 now. But the prices for an upgrade from T8300 to T9300 vary! Isn't it just the same CPU? Why?

Inspiron 1520:
T8300 to T9300: Cost NT$ 3141.6-

Inspiron 1720:
T8300 to T9300: Cost NT$ 4983.3-

XPS M1530:
T8300 to T9300: Cost NT$ 2946.3-

Componant cost varrys because when a system is designed and implimented it goes through a market annalisys to determine the model cost. Differant models are geared for differant types of customers, the inspiron models are geared for everyday users, the xps is more elite branded and has better support and warantee options to the cost for the same part would be more in the xps than the inspiron

At Dell Taiwan, the Inspiron series provide better options than XPS series.

It's all marketing. Very often the same hardware is inside different models and you can flash BIOS to change models, and capabilities. Even "geeks" get taken in by it.

The T8300 and T9300 are different processors (the former's clock speed is 2.4 GHz, the latter's is 2.5 GHz, maybe the cache sizes also are different), but I agree that the upgrade price (from the former to the latter) should be the same regardless of what notebook PC is being configured.
