Display Packaging Needs LESS Foam

80 points posted to Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies by lyonadmiral May 12

As an IT professional who sets up 50+ machines in a sitting, there is nothing more frustrating than unpacking a new LCD panel. Having experience with both new and refurbished panels I can tell you that the refurbished panel is packed much better than the new panel. New panels have to be unboxed like an union, 3 layers of styrofoam in order to completely break down and recycle the box. The refurbished display comes with two lightweight pieces of foam that secure the LCD and the stand in the box. Even with those two pieces the poduct is secured enough quite well to sustain the trip to my rural location. The new LCD packaging, wastes too much time, plus it uses too much material. Start using less.

I am sorry but I disagree.. The more packaging you can put the better. My computer arrived at my house with everything flipped upside down. You could see DHL had really thrown that thing around. The reality is that shipping carriers are obvoiusly not that careful with their packages and DELL needs to protect their products. I understand the difficulty that creates for you that have to be taking appart so many new boxes. But, when carriers treat them packages the way they seem to.... You cant go wrong with more packaging. And displays are quite fragile things IMO.

And this idea conflicts with IMHO a more fun idea here: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10088250/Build_a_Foam_Character_Contest

At the least why not use a biodegradeable foam? I know they made popcorn packing that dissolved in water, why not do something similar for the product packaging?

Reply to Stormrider451: I'm sorry you recieved a damaged package and I do understand the issue, however people who are in the transportation business should not be allowed to shirk their responsibilities by damaging parcels in their care.

Reply to JMXZ: That is a fun project.

Reply to LeoLoneWolf_NW08: I agree, but when you have deadlines to meet, you need to get stuff done fast. But as I noted above and in the original post I feel that you can get the protection you want, in two pieces like that refurbished monitors come in.
