Keep the XPS Product Line

According to Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/12/dell-dropping-xps-focusing-on-alienware) Dell is going to be dropping the XPS product line and focusing on the Alienware brand for gaming and high performance computing. Promote this Idea to let Dell know that we need to keep the XPS desktop and laptop product line.

May 12		 It doesn't make a difference to me either way. Dell XPS and Alienware products are in competition with one another. It makes sense for Dell to drop one of them. I've said all along Dell needs much less duplication in it's product lines.

May 12		 It would be a shame to see the XPS desktop line go. Using the XPS notebooks has convinced me that my next desktop would be XPS also. I don't much care for the other proprietary desktop computers and would probably opt to build my own otherwise. Alienware desktops seem tacky and overpriced by comparison.

XPS will still be around just not the high dollar gaming ones which will be from Alienware. The XPS are big sellers and I fear they will see a drop in sales from people who don't like the Alienware look or name.

May 13		 Being a Dell customer, and who's warrenty will expire this year, i.e. 2008, here's why I felt the XPS 730 was the XPS epitaph;
a) Dell surveyed a new "side panel" door: not everyone liked the current pick, as some preferred the other. Dell's XPS 720 offered the option of having it attached for $120. Dell then later "forced" customers into the door-panel for $120.
b) The XPS 730 isn't much of an improvement over the XPS 720, and yet, fully configured with an included 30'' monitor, it exceeds $10,000. A top-of-the-line gaming chassis, price expected. However, when one goes over to Alienware, and configures an Area-51 7500, it exceeds $10,000, and the products there-in are much much better, and more attractive. (the computer components, it has nothing to do with overall look, services, and quality)
c) If Dell has bought Alienware, why even keep the XPS and Alienware lines seperate? If it's now actually one company, a customer is coming to this place, and saying: "ok, they offer 2 different names, why am I having to choose between them?". While other customers, aren't even aware that said company has now been formed. I'd suggest calling calling this new line: "Dellienware", "Area-51 XPS", or something of the sorts, then outsource it to those countries that can "currently" get Dell products, but not Alienware. The conjoined name is ment to not create confusion between customers, as they'll wonder what would've happened to the XPS name.
Overall, I'm providing feedback, as this isn't ment to be critical; as since I've originally purchased an XPS machine, since then, the XPS line hasn't made any "major" improvements, the XPS chassis has always been the same, there's no feeling, or theme to it, it's just a bulky piece of aluminum, with a lightbulb at the front-head.

I met up with a friend of mine, of whom I hadn't seen in some time. I took one look at this chassis he had, and I immediatly said: "wow dude, is that the antec 900 chassis?!" I've had an XPS chassis since 2004, and my friend's house was lit-dim, it was dark, and we tested this out: the blue-light 120mm fans on the antec 900, got me all excited. I've known of the Antec 900, however, I've been an XPSer, and I noticed a heavily-armed difference; as my XPS is dull, gloomy, whereas, his was bright, colorful, and amazing.
Long story short, Dell's XPS line, isn't keeping up with technology. It took next-to forever, for Corsair Dominator to arrive. Taking a part at random; if I'm going to spend over $10,000 on an XPS 730, I shouldn't get the labeled; "standard ATX motherboard" on the invoice, but a top-of-the line motherboard such as an EVGA Nvidia 790i ultra motherboard. It's nice, and in similiar fashion, that the XPS 730 offers dual ATI videocards, but what of those people that wanted dual Nvidia 7900 GX2? I understand, that it's impossible to please everybody, but it's another example. Same with Intel's Skulltrail motherboard; it can socket "2" processors and 16GB of RAM. This is big stuff, and it's released well before the Dell XPS 730, and yet, upon configuration, your just given the: "standard ATX motherboard".
A prime example to summarize everything up; the power button for the XPS chassis. It was the very first product I had to have replaced, and reinstalled. I was asking myself: "this is just a power button, and I payed thousands of dollars, to have it fall inside the chassis? That doesn't make the XPS name look good". The power button is what turns this high-powered gaming machine on, and if the very thing that lightens those front-head lightbulbs don'twork, then what does that suggest to the overall theme of the XPS chassis's "what's the theme here?" And it's been like that since I purchased an XPS 700, up-to, and including the XPS 730.
In conclusion, my warrenty with Dell will expire this year, and I've been thinking ahead, as to whether or not I should upgrade parts, or buy a new computer. Going over to Newegg.com, I can get top-of-the-line parts, and build my own "XPS 730", for less then $5.000. Why am I shelling out another $5,000 for an XPS model, that doesn't improve much on the XPS 700? I could make the arguement that it goes towards the technicians per example, but that'd be included in your technical-labor warrenty at/around $300.
Am I bashing the XPS line? No, just pointing out how I've felt thus far, since 2004. It'd be nice to know, that I could press the power button on my gaming machine, and have it light up the entire room, as oppose to just a smile. It's greatly appreciated, that Dell's looking into this Alienware business line, and looking at the overall scenario of the XPS, and taking it much more seriously. I just hope, that when my warrenty expires, they'll haven't waited to long; as sooner is better than later.

The current arrangement is ideal because Alienware is a successful one-act-show (all of their cases look like glistening alien heads -- this only appeals to boy-gamers), where XPS appeals to a more diverse market that doesn't overlap with Alienware's.

Plus, all XPS cases are superb.

yerpp i agree with the idea dont drop XPS..my reason is..i am staying in my homeland, Malaysia..if dell drop XPS which known as gaming PC..as a gamer and fan of dell..i dunno what else to purchase then..because if dell focusing their gaming PC at only alienware how about people who lives in area like me..Malaysia..because if i purchase alienware..the cost for shipment is way too expensive..and if there is a 1000 people like me..we have no other choice but to choose HP or Toshiba gaming spec which is not as high as XPS..and this will eventually lead to dell losing a 100 or more customers..or dell could make a new solution to put alienware stores in many places in asia..and also if compared prices between XPS and alienware..XPS is more affordable...

May 13		 For reference, the Coolermaster Stacker 830 Evolution is the best standalone case you can buy. It has an aluminum chassis, tool-less design, enough spots for fans to lift off, and a rather attractive exterior. I vastly prefer XPS exterior designs to anything else available.

I just read it on a french website. According to the Wall Street journal, Dell is willing to stop their XPS products (nowhere is it mentioned if it's only desktops or both tho) by replacing them with Alienware products.

Now, for the love of god, please do not stop the XPS laptops.
First of all because they are by far the sweetest designs you can get along with vaio's and MacBooks's.
Second of all, because some people are looking for a laptop that does not look crap (ie Lenovo's Thinkpad, and many others), but also has enough power to work on it and a decent weight to actually take it away anywhere you want.

Even though Alienware laptops are quite something, many people (and not only woman) seek for a laptop that isn't 2" inches thick.

Please take that in consideration, or even promote it !

May 13		 I suggested in a different idea that the number of product lines need to be streamlined. I'm glad that they're doing that. Fewer lines, but configuability in those lines should equal lower cost and greater margins.

I read that Dell plans to drop the XPS line and replace it with Alienware. XPSes are already bad, but Alienwares are 10 times worse!!

I do not want to be forced into buying an Alienware the next time when I want a Dell gaming PC! Please, do not drop XPS! Keep the XPS line, both the desktops and the notebooks.

May 15		 I agree with "hanya" that Dell would lose more than gain if the XPS range is drop,unless Dell is considering bringing Alienware system to other part of the country like Malaysia.Dell could put the XPS range on another line of products and making Alienware products as their gaming range .Moreover configuration options on the Dell XPS is definitely limited as compare to Alienware.Since Dell has bought over Alienware,Dell should consider making alienware system worldwide and not limited to only US and the Europe region.

May 24		 Once Alienware has been "strengthened" I believe it would be a good idea to use Dell as your base for affordable and adequately priced computers and use Alienware as a base for your top end and incredibly powerful computers. However, one of the major issues that you need to address about Alienware is that-to my knowledge- it does not have a base of operations in the U.K and the products have to be imported from the U.S.
