Get the XPS 720 Certified As Ubuntu Compatible

270 points posted to Linux, XPS products by aikiwolfie Jun 22

Please have the basic XPS 720 certified as Ubuntu compatible. I've been using one for about a year now with Ubuntu as my only OS and it works without a hitch. No problems.

Note: Basic means no X-Fi sound card and no PhysX card.

Obviously this would mean that configuring an XPS 720 with an X-Fi sound card or a PhysX card would require a Windows operating system. But otherwise the XPS 720 probably will work with Ubuntu.

It means the basic configuration works fine. The X-Fi and PhysX cards are add-ons. Extras that cost extra. The 720 like all modern PCs has on-board sound. PhysX cards aren't exactly essential. In fact i don't think there really anything that uses them properly.

Creative do have a beta Linux driver for the X-Fi and there are a few other third party drivers around. But none as yet work terribly well. So it's better to use the 720 under Linux with the on-board sound. Which is actually perfectly adequate anyway.

But as I've said, the basic system works fine. The 720 can be bought in it's basic configuration. No reason not to have it certified.

I believe that this idea should be extended... Dell should always provide at least one configuration per system that is Linux compatible. And should be marketed and labeled in the website as such.

Well if they would start making the basic configuration compatible with both Linux and Windows they'd save themselves a lot of work in the long run. Assuming of course Dell is serious about Linux.
