InCar PC

30 points posted to Broadband and Mobility, Laptops by roderic8 Jun 30

This is a PC like system that is larger than the IPODs, Blackberries or NAV Systems with all the functions. This system would replace these current handheld/portable systems with a PC that have more capabilities than window mobile systems. The InCar PC system would have a small keyboard that would has a docking station that is incorporated into current and new car models. The three systems listed above all require separate operating systems, the InCar PC will have one operating system, portable, and offer music, E-mail, PC functions with Keyboard and NAV. With InCar PC you will have a NAV system, a Music Jukebox, in hand Internet, and a PC operating system while in your car or on the street.

i like the idea.... BUT (and this is a big.... although) people behind the wheel are already distracted enough as it is. out here in japan we got cars with built in TV's in the dash and touch screen GPS's (i'm betting they run linux) and the people that have them move side to side faster than they move forward. the last thing they need is a full blown PC (or even a stripped down PC) to distract them

but i'm all for it in the back seat or passanger seat

@jdelidc I wouldn't like to be driving on a Japanese street when the hottest soap comes on.

The woman that killed my neighbor was on her palm-pilot and admitted to being distracted. I see you out there everyday doing anything but driving your 3000lb weapon of mass destruction! Please for the love of your neighbors stop! If you are the one driving the car then do it and nothing else! The GPS is dumbing people down and the cellphone makes you forget there is another car in front of you! Get it together people. You may think it is not a big deal but when you smash into your neighbors child and have to live with that for the rest of your life you would happily give up even am talk radio!

@jacqsj14 that is a good reason for demoting.

Too much of a distraction. Even if it were voice activated...you would still need to look at the monitor at some point and away from the road.

Now if the PC would drive the car, that would be an application I could support. We saw in the DARPA Urban Challenge that computers CAN operate cars in compliance with California laws. Eventually the DELL autopilot will have its day.

I have had enough of people almost running into me because they are putting on makeup, texting, talking on the cell, or reading the newspaper. A computer in the car would be ok IF a kill switch came with it. The only time you could use it your automobile would have to be turn off and could not be turn on if your automobile was on.

Police cars already have this technology.

@sugarbear police cars have a different technology and, where I live, it is against police procedures for an officer to drive and operate the computer a the same time.

I am not condoning using this system while driving. I agree with the concerns over distraction, but must drivers are more distracted when they are lost and trying to read the traffic signs or maps. A kill switch would be required and the system would have to be voice activated thru the car audio system. The main purpose for this system is the replace three or four other systems/tools we are using today, i.e., Maps, Cell Phones, Map Quest Print outs, GPSs, and sign reading. Referring dumping down drivers, when Louis and Clark was mapping the west the old well trained trackers probably said that people are going to be dumb down because of the Map, they would not know how to read the terrain or stars -today we all can read maps

I wouldn't say "we all can read maps." Many don't know which side of the map is up. Better to type the destination address into the computer and let the robodriver take you there.

@paperpilot, some of the pc`s in the cop cars around here have internet capability, GPs, and a few other things, besides the standard NCIC and what ever state information, for the state they are in. I would hope they wouldn`t be using it driving down the road either.

Some of them read information to the officer so they don't have to look at the screen.

Apparently the pc`s in the cop cars may be different. It may all boil down to how much an agency can spend on each patrol unit.
