Better Security

100 points posted to Software by nivek Jul 1

Dell should work with Microsoft to create a Authentication Software for computers that are equipped with Microphones and/or Webcams. This software would A) Be able to Authenticate a user based on voice recognition and B) Be able to Authenticate a user based on face recognition. If Dell and Microsoft work together to get this released in Windows 7, it could be listed as a major feature of Dell Machines (Compatible with Windows Authentication) and of Windows 7. This partnership would be mutually beneficial, and I only hope that workers from Apple and Apple supporters are not allowed to see these suggestions.

Apple Users, GO AWAY!

Oh, yes! I'm so sorry I forgot that, but it should be in there. Thanks for Reminding!

If someone had physical access to your computer, the last thing they'd do is try to login to Windows. (If they were attempting to crack it).
There are ways to get in, such as renaming the Utility Manager, from a LiveCD that can write NTFS.

or just use safe mode and remove the password lol

LiveCD's are better for me, I'm happier in a Linux environment.

@ james-94: Finger print readers for some reason can't read my finger prints. Some people have said it might be because I've done a lot of manual labour in my time, I have a scar on my right index finger or I'm an alien. Whatever the reason finger print readers are useless to me. They just don't work.

That is the beauty of this idea, it should be flexible so that it remains secure even if some people can't use one or two of the offered methods.

Yeah but voice recognition and facial recognition are severely processor intensive applications.

Finger print reader should still be included because they still work for other people. If they don't work for someone they can use the voice and face recognition

Yes. I like that idea. And like you I hope no other software genuises are taking our ideas and running away with them. That would be awful and we wouldn't have a leg to stand on legallly would we?

No you wouldn't. The idea is in the public domain now. Which is why all of Dells competitors are reading IdeaStorm and implementing all of our ideas before Dell does. Just how do they do that so fast while Dell just dithers away?

Anyway! Yes finger print readers do work for many many many other people and I'm probably just a freak of nature. Yes they should be included for people that want them who can make use of them. But bear in mind the current generation of finger print readers only allow you to by pass typing in your password. They don't replace it and don't stop it being used. So it's a convenience item that doesn't actually increase security that much.

The same fail safe would probably be included with voice and facial recognition. It would have to be. What would happen if you were in a noisy environment? What if your web cam broke or you were in a poorly lit room? Different lighting can make you look totally different.

The idea would be that you could configure all the options that work for you, and choose which ones to use during login. That way everyone gets as much security as they want.

If anyone besides Dell and Microsoft (and maybe linux, they have such a small market share it wouldn't matter) uses my ideas, I will have to sue them. These suggestions are directed to Dell and Microsoft ONLY!

Good luck suing for patents, because, you know, prior art.

Ok here's the thing. You don't own a patent on this idea. You don't own a patent on any voice recognition technology and many other companies do. You don't own any patents on any face recognition technology and plenty of other companies do. You also don't even own any patents on any sort of HCI technologies and plenty of other companies do.

I'm also betting someone has tried this patented it and failed to produce anything workable thus far. It's not exactly a new idea. It's also pretty hard to get something patented once you put it into the public domain. IdeaStorm is a public forum. Anybody including Dells competitors can read it. If they implement the ideas first, they get the prize money.

I really don't want to turn anybody away from IdeaStorm. But if you don't want your ideas out in the open up for grabs. It might be best not to post them in a public forum.

Ideas can never be patented.
Lenovo already has a face recognition application and bundles it with IdeaCenter k210

Ideas can be patented so long as you have some sort of detailed specification to go with the idea. You don't need a working product or any real R&D.

That should be changed.
Darn patent trolls.
