Basic tablet

A recent idea [should be the next one down] suggests a high-spec tablet.

Why not a low-spec one? The market for sub-$500 [and even sub-$250] ultra mobiles is simply massive. People love the idea of a small, lightweight, simple computer little bigger [and only a littler more expensive] than a sandwich.

So why no tablet version? I've long since lost track of the number of articles and tutorials online for adding a touchscreen to an Eee-type laptop, at a cost of around $100 retail. Why can't such a thing be offered direct from resellers/manufacturers? So far, all of the convertible ultramobiles have a massive price premium, and the UMPC brigade still cost more than my car.

On a small laptop the TS doesn't even need to be great - they're not exactly likely to be used for high-res design or CAD work, the TS on my four year old Palm is more than sensitive enough.

I might be wrong, but I imagine the main barrier to this would be Microsoft's reluctance to licence XP versions for ultramobiles outside their UMPC definition.

Edit - my bad, the high-spec idea is about ten down.
