clearer warranty regarding LCD, and other things

250 points posted to Monitors and Displays, Laptops by ninjagecko Jul 2

I've seen the screens of many competitors's laptops break down, and sometimes it isn't included in the warranty. For example:

[ begin conversation : ]

student: "Half my LCD screen suddenly died. I did absolutely nothing whatsoever since I cleanly shut my computer down last night."

customer support: "Sorry, that's not covered under warranty. It's accidental damage. You'll have to pay $500."

[ : end conversation ]

I'm afraid of buying laptops now without a very statement in the warranty about what is included in the warranty and what is not. For example is the battery included? (usually not) Is the power strip included? (probably not but it should be)

Personally I firmly believe an LCD screen should be included in the warranty.

I've also heard of cold damage sometimes being a problem; that could in part be addressed with a removable warning label.

Agreed. for the record cracked or damaged LCDs are not covered under any stadnard warranty from any manufacturer. Dell does offer complete care which covers cracked lcd pnaels, and accidetnal damage.. All other LCD panels problems are generally covered under nromal warranty.

Personally I think all warranties could be clearer. But it also pays to know your rights as a consumer. In the UK if something breaks down and it's covered by a warranty then so long as you claim with in a certain time period, the manufacturer or retailer has to prove it wasn't their fault if they want to wriggle out of the warranty. So just saying over the phone "Oh that's accidental damage mate, tough luck £500 please!", just wouldn't cut it.

I've seen sales reps pop their portable into a valise full of papers and then give it a nice little shove to get it closed. Obviously notebooks aren't made for that kind of stress. I agree that the terms of warranty should be clear and I think that Dell does a pretty good job at it actually. Note that no manufactuer of any goods at all covers accidental damage under a standard warranty.

No they don't. But that's not the scenario described by the OP.

I had the LCD die on my Inspiron 8500 four years ago, and it was replaced under warranty by Dell. It was at that time one year old and I had a three year next work day warranty. Someone came to my house a did the replacement work on the spot.

Dell offers the 'Complete Care' warranty just for this purpose. I think the wording is sufficiently clear. Consider: Dell is the only company to offer Complete Care too.
