Buy a laptop, get free ipod SHOULD = buy a laptop, get free ZUNE

Dell could do more to target the college market. Apple is offering a promotion until September where ANY purchase of an apple laptop includes a FREE 8 GB IPOD touch for students. (www.apple.com for verification) I am attracted to the Studio series, and am impressed with the many improvements comparable with from the ibook pro (for example, backlit keyboards). However, a free IPOD touch blows Dell out of the water on comparable notebooks.

Also, Apple's student discount is ten times that of what Dell offers ($17 off at 10% of purchasing price from Dell vs. $182 off the least expensive systems listed at $999 from Apple.)

Dell is making it clear it doesn’t value it's collegiate business. As a repeat Dell customer, this is very disappointing. Please reconsider.

How about a choice instead?

I love my Zune. I just wish it worked with Linux.

Apple makes money from itunes and has higher markup on their systems, i dont see how dell can match the deal without raising prices or starting an online music store.
..

what about a free Dell DJ ditty with every laptop purchase?

Wouldn't a better Idea be for Dell to make it's own music player, rather than resell one made by a software vendor?

I think the most notable thing about the Zune is that it coined a new term "zunked"

“Perhaps the only story in the news is that Microsoft’s partners - from device makers to music services - just got double crossed by the company they choose to believe in.”

Noting that Dell's music player was one of Microsoft's victims here, I doubt they'd feel that good about bundling a Zune.

The idea doesn't so much seem to be focused on the PARTICULAR player as it is Dell's inability to market to college students. ANY player or reasonable discount would be a huge improvement over the current "deal" Dell offers.

This poster is obviously correct. Dell should be offering a free product that is in line with what they do, and supporting competitors is NOT the right thing to do. Dell should be giving away zunes, but they can at the VERY MINIMUM offer a choice.

@nivek: "Dell should be offering a free product "

There's no such thing. Just because the cost is added to the base configuration's price doesn't mean the cost magically vanishes. All this does is raise the prices for people who don't want the "free" add-on.

"Dell should be giving away zunes"

Giving away a music player from one software vendor (windows) not really that different than giving away a music player from a different one (macos). For this idea to make sense Dell could possibly give away their own music player instead, which would be closer to "free" when they had excess inventory. But too bad the Dell music player was among those who were "zunked" in 2006.

Sigh, fanboys.

I'd prefer an extra 5% discount tbh.

@jmxz, sorry, I was just going off the posted title. I didn't read the actual post. I should have said "they should be doing whatever they are doing with ipods with Zune's instead".

Demoted: I prefer Dell to have low prices overall, than giving discounts here and there or giving gifts that some may want and others not. Also I think it is not good to look at the discount ($17 for Dell versus $182) but rather look at the overall price and what you get for, and complain not about the meager discount, but rather compare similar computer from Dell and Apple and look at the net price (after discounts, including shipping etc.) and then "complain/comment" if Dell's offering costs more than Apple's offering.

Since the posting of this idea, Dell has increased their discount offer to $244 on the Studio 15.4, which is very comparable to the Mac in terms of performance and specs, and has included a video camera ($149 value) with the purchase. As stated previously, it was not the item which was desired, but rather an attempt by the manufacturer to compete for college-age business. Clearly, others across the country also had the same idea, regardless of the haughty demotions by some on this forum. Thanks, Dell, for keeping my business!
