Sell more desktops without monitors, keyboards, etc

15468 points posted to Desktops, Environment, Sales Strategies by gordonbrown77 02/16/07 **COMING SOON**

Make it an option to not get things people may already have when upgrading a PC such as monitors, mouse, keyboard. This would be good environmentally and save people some money if they already have theae things and will not be keeping the old PC.

I can agree on this. I use an 8 port KVM switch at home and have no real need to stockpile uneeded Monitors. The mouse and keyboard probably only cost a total of 25 to 30 dollars so that's not a big deal, but I never really have a need for another monitor. If say you have a loss leader of 599.00 with 17" monitor, then why not make the loss leader availble at 350.00 without Monitor. I say leave the keyboard and mice in the deal. I go through lots of keyboards and mice just because I work on my motorycle and cars alot and grunge these thing up.

or make it an option atleast. I agree that when you just want a new box that it would be better environmentally and for less clutter around the house. then again you could always sell the extra stuff to get your money back or donate it to a childrens school or something.

I agree wholeheartedly with this idea. It is often impossible to buy a Dell desktop without a monitor and a keyboard, at least by configuring it on the web site. Most people already have a perfectly working monitor, and a keyboard, and this is just a waste.

Ah, looks like I'm not the only one looking to buy a new PC without all the extras.
I already bought two PC from Dell and both come in full set (monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc).
For us existing PC users, all this extras (monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc) are unnecessary when we are looking to buy a new PC.
We just want a PC without the extras (monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc).
I'm sure it can be done, check out http://www.googoo.com.sg or even www.gateway.com and see what I mean.

Allow customers to opt out from receiving keyboards and CDs

To cut down on the waste, Dell should allow its customers to opt out from receiving items such as keyboards and CDs. Anyone ordering more than one computer is unlikely to need to more than one copy of Dell drivers for example. Business customers are unlikely to need keyboards for their servers. By allowing your customers to opt out you a) decrease the waste and b) save yourself some money. It's a win-win situation.

I agree, but THIS IS ALREADY AN OPTION! There's clearly a check box allowing you to turn down that free monitor, and i believe it works for the mouse and keyboard, too.

Yeah you definitely can opt out of bundles and just get the box. I think the bundling of "free" peripherals is seriously overused outside of obvious "starter" packages. It should be done differently on higher-end systems -- if done at all -- high end users will want an upgraded monitor and printer, not a typical "freebie."

I want to take this as far as leaving out power cords. The company I work for buys about 300 new Dell servers a quarter and we always order them with the bare minimum just to make unpacking them less time consuming. It always has bothered me that someone had to mine the copper, assemble the power cord, ship it from asia to texas, then to our location only to have 2400 per year wind up in our co-lo's dumpster. We buy custom-length power cords from another manufacturer to reduce rack clutter and have no use for anything from Dell except the bare server chassis itself. ALL the rest winds up in the trash :o(

This has been an option for years...

i agree...let customers choose a no power cord option. after various computer upgrades I have enough power cords to last me a lifetime. may not save me any money, but at least its one less item i'm throwing in the dumpster.

Have option to configure desk top wtihout monitor

Current customization does not allow configuration with opt out for monitor if customers already has a good monitor but is looking for new hardware console.
This would give additional options to customise system.

I totally agree with this...You should not have to get the montior and keyboard when you purchase a system. There are alot of people out there that just want the tower.. This should have been done a long time ago.....

I think thats a bad idea having no hard drive. Yes some people wipe it clean and install fresh XP, like I do, but to not have a hard drive at all, its just crazy. Plus the diagnostic partition is a really useful feature.

YES! I am *very* picky about my keyboards; I must have my buckling spring! The keyboards that come with dells, for me, are throw-aways. I don't understand how people can type all day on a $5 keyboard.

I believe Dell can offer this, It should be no problem DIY your computer from Dell.

I was a bit irritated that I was forced to purchase a mouse and a keyboard with my Optiplex system I bought a year ago. Seems wasteful to me because those things are just sitting a storage tub not being used. I wonder how much of the electronics waste that I see discussed on the news every now and then is comprised of just old computer mice and keyboards.

The problem here is that it WILL cause customer relations headaches for Dell. You'd be surprised how many people want to keep using their AT keyboard & 640x480 monitors. Many new pcs dont even have PS2 ports anymore, or have gone to DVI only & so youd need an adapter for your old D-SUB monitor.

Grandma will gladly keep using her old monitor and keyboard in order to save $10... and then spend HOURS on tech support lines trying to understand why her blueberry imac isnt a monitor.

Its just not worth it, just take the dell kb & mouse & put it in a closet somewhere, donate it to charity, whatever. Dell has very good reasons for including them with EVERY pc.

But we've already proposed the idea that on the Dell website you should be able to either buy the default pc, customise basic options, or really customise it in every conceivable detail. If you go for the last option, there's absolutely no way in hell you're going to misunderstand the connections like that. Again, another reason for Dell to provide much, much greater detail about each computer to those who want to see it.

But, PS2 ports?? When did they get phased out? :-( :'( I've never seen a pc without them and I hope I never will damn frankly! How on God's Earth else are you supposed to plug the keyboard and mouse in??

"I've never seen a pc without them and I hope I never will"

HP and compaq both have systems that have no PS2 port, or one only. I cant speak for dell, ive not messed with any of their desktop stuff. Also most laptops only have one ps2 port if they have one at all.

"How on God's Earth else are you supposed to plug the keyboard and mouse in??"

Add option to remove the power cord and offer different lengths. My company has *hundreds* of extra power cords we get from new systems and don't use.

Agree, i don't want a mouse, i dont need a keyboard.
i already have these, i dont want to pay the extra 10$ and it'd be a bonus point for dell on the greenpeace chart.

please give us this option on ALL pcs

Hi. What is the status of this idea? are we going to have this option(s) soon? At the moment I would buy a Dell desktop - but I do not do it because i don't want an extra monitor. Thanks
