The Dell Axim PDA is not super-popular, but I think if it moved into the SmartPhone realm (especially in order to compete with upcoming iPhone) then it could pick up some market-share and be a great device for US cell phone providers.

otacon 02/16/07	My Treo can do everything the iPhone can and more. The iPhone is no great innovation, it's just Apple trying to get 1% marketshare of the billions spent on cell phone handsets that Jobs talked about. Wouldn't be surprised of Microsoft came out with a phone. The only place the iPhone is going to make any money is in the US. They polled people in Asia, Japan, Europe, etc and they have no interest in the iPhone since their phones can already do 10x more. iPhone is too little too late. I totally agree Dell should make some of their PDA's into smartphones.

noname2007 04/15/07	Yes and make sure there are versions of it with the following (as this would be rather unique): - CF card slot - RS232 port So there would have to be 2 models: - one with smal form factor (smaller than Axim) without the features above - one with Axim x51 form factor (sharing the same craddle?) and the features above Both should have Windows Mobile as OS

The cell phone manufacturing market is very vertically integrated and barriers to entry too high for Dell (a computer hardware company) to see any benefit in investing in a business unit that handles that.

Miniaturization will have to keep going for some time. I mean, adding a camera or not changes the design of the phone hugely. If i throw in a memory card slot or not can throw off all my hardware etc. finally the guy who wants everything on his phone is going to wind up with a huge thing that he hates. So overall good idea, but unlikely to be achieved for many years still. When that ammount of miniaturization is available, i will want a built in ac adaptor

I have made mine into a fully functional phone and mini computer. I bought the "break it - get a new one policy" and took my Axim apart and with some few modifications, my axim is a little running computer. The hardest part was to get a USB port and changing the mother board. I used to think USA was number 1. I got tired of having to look at Japanese electronics as leaders. Stand up ! Lets get this countries name some pride. ( Beside being able to put a bullet into someone over oil which is nothing but a black eye on us all. )

Creating a PDA phone is that that big of a stretch for them. PDA phones have become very popular and will be gaining market share over the years. Perhaps you should explain why you are against this?

I love dell pda, except i cannot be bothered with carrying 2 device (pde and a mobile phone) I know theres are some other manufacturer that made this, but none is even close in to dell PDA in term of state of the art technologies (graphic processor, preccesor speed, etc). So far i am stuck with O2 phone which have absolute terrible techinal support. Btw, it doesn't have to compete with super-soared iPhone either, just axim x51v with phone will definetely do for me.

And since I've been so used to the Linux OS, I will look for mobiles that are Linux based. I truly wish Dell comes with something that is great in design and uses Linux.

But, with the iPhone coming from Apple, Dell could combat the compitition with an Axim PDA Phone. They could leave it open, if possible to use with any carrier, or make it carrier exclusive. The iPhone is actully atracting people to Cingular, mainly because of hardcore Apple brand loyalty. It would be a huge win for Dell to create something like that.

When I first started to use them I thought they were good but needed improvement. Now that I switched to a Blackberry I can see just how bad the software really is. The software is slow, needs rebooting to run properly, provides poor battery life and at times has a mind of its own. Several times my phone would decide to call people on its own while in sleep mode. Other times it wouldn't function properly because when I closed a program it would stay running in the background. Sure I could work my way through the setting to force it to close but that isn't the way it should work. I think if Dell decided to make a PDA phone they should offer different choices for an OS so they at least get it right in one area. I can kind of understand phubert demoting this due to the lack of choice in OS.

AT&T is also tightly coupled with Microsoft and this is likely to RESTRICT my CHOICES... and that is ONE of the areas where the U.S. has been superior to other nations (with the notable exception of Japan (tell me of others you're aware of)): consumer CHOICE.

Unfortunately ATT is the only carrier for local phone and internet in my area unless I switch to satellite internet and VOIP which I refuse to do. ATT is a very controlling company that does not supply a product that is good enough to justify the premium they charge.

The key components/features the phone should have: + Wi-Fi + SYNC compatable + Wireless/mobile internet Should include easy access to: - credit card updates/e-statements - email - espn/sports - major news - stocks - weather + Extended Battery Life - this is especially key because the next advances made in this field will be in the extended battery life department. + Digital storage capability, 10-50 GB + External storage capable, therefore plenty of ports including USB, card-based, and others + Easily accessible, either via touch screen or any other, with easily operable interface + Bluetooth/Wireless capabilities with; laptops/desktops, printers, television, etc. (could even get as advanced as home thermostat systems, vehicular key-fob replacement) + Easy time-viewing (possibly permanent, whether in on, off, or standby modes) If these features are all included, the DellCell phone could be a hit. A key thing to remember is that one of the nice features in the iphone is its ability to simplify web-browsing. By having simple links to important websites, it eliminates the need to type, (such as email viewing programs, bookmark capabilities, etc). Typing will be hard on these gadgets, its a given, so look into ways to eliminate as much as possible the need to type. Any more ideas for features?

The same thing is happening with the iphone. Beyond this, Dell never used to be in mp3 players, tvs, projectors, or any of that, but they are doing just fine in those markets.

I have an Axim and wouldnt mind an axim based cell phone option, but dell needs a home run product. Dell is simply not delivering many home run product, dell has had some nicer designs as of late but very few are really eye cathing or innovative. if it doesnt stand out it will simply compete with all the other smart phones on the market.
