Student Discounts!

19303 points posted to Education, Sales Strategies by cnmopt 02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy.

I guess some people miss the Dell fliers provided in most news papers or the ad's in many of the major magazines because they have offered that for a while now and advertised it in those ad's..

Yes, I've heard a lot about those student discounts in USA (many college people talk about them on the internet), why don't you offer similar promotions in Latin America, e. g. Mexico?

It's already done...... info is through the schools and the purchase is made at dell.com/epp

My university has 'special pricing' for student purchases with Dell and its a scam - the prices are always better on Dell's public sites.

My college also has a "special deal" on dell products. Sometimes they're really good deals, sometimes they're not. If your aiming for anything, it's that the college deals should always at least be better than their public deals.

In addition to this Idea already being completed - is it even a good idea?

Why Students as opposed to
Fireman discounts (if you were thinking benefit to society) or
Unemployed discounts (if you were thinking difficulty paying) or
Toddler Discounts (if you were thinking 'get them hooked young').

Rather than subsidize one group at the expense of others, I'd rather see fair and low pricing across all customers (and that means the same price for Home and Small Business and Government and Large Business as well as Students and Firement and Homeless and Toddlers).

Well said jmxz. You should not have to shop around different sections of the site to get the best price. I think they should be the same across all sections and maybe have a small discount for bulk purchasing.

French liberal says "why should the students get a discount"? Why not offer a cheaper price to low income families? Apple does this because they have a market penetration problem, and think if you get hooked early, its for life. Dell doesn't have this problem. Dell should adjust its prices to the tax / income of customers... Nee, just another French idea... Dell should avoid this, just drop any price differentials to convince its customers that they deal with a fair price. If schools buy in bulk, it's another story...

Haha I love ppl who make topics withough doing research too !!! Thats what makes this country so great lol.

As far as Latin America goes, the reason for the price increase is the export and import taxes. Tell the govt. to lower the taxes and dell can sell the computers cheaper there

To summarize and elaborate on many issues already mentioned here.

1. While student discounts are offered by Dell, unlike Apple, apparently many students aren't aware of them. (Is this a Dell marketing/channel management opportunty?)
2. Its unclear if/how discounts are offered outside the US; could this be an opportunity for Dell if there's off-shore manufacturing so that the distribution costs can be minimized?
3. Discount pricing is apparently inconsistent (based on posted comments). Perhaps there could be a simple percentage discount offered on any personal computer configuration on any Dell site or in any sales channel based on an easily determined qualifying student status. (The goal would be to simplify the purchase process, have equality of dscounts across all sales channels, and build long term customer satisfaction)
4. Possibly consider offering a tiered college discount and offer to those working toward IT degrees a larger discount. (Obviously, this would be to build brand loyalty for those who will be in positions to make future Dell bulk purchases.)
5. Offer additional special discounts for qualifying elementary, high school and college students attending non-profit schools, schools that serve community populations with a lower income base, all students on scholarships, etc.

An idea opposing this idea is here:
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/67144
Dell offers many special-purpose discounts ranging from "personal systems for federal government workers" to "families of dell employees" to students.

Someone pays for all those discounts - and that someone is whomever pays full price.

Better, IMHO to have fair pricing for everyone. If you agree, vote up http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/67144

To jmxz

You've made good posts and you raise an interesting point here, but "Someone pays for all those discounts - and that someone is whomever pays full price" doesn't apply DIRECTLY in most cases where large businesses (like Dell) are trying to grow their markets.

Many businesses consider growing their customer base (my points 2 & 4) and building good will (point 5) as necessary costs of doing business. Those costs aren't DIRECTLY shifted on a "dollar per dollar" basis to the price other customers pay. It's seldom the case in any large business that if X number of customers get a discount of 15% for a product, another segment of X number of customers are charged 15% more for that product. Of course its quite true that in ANY “for profit" business ALL costs (advertising, customer support, R&D, salaries, insurance, etc.) must ultimately be paid for by revenue. However, in a well-run business the costs of a product discount aren't directly and immediately shifted to other customers buying that product, especially when discounts are being offered to achieve a broader business purpose like building new markets and generating future revenue. It's also true that as the sales volume of a product increases, the unit cost and the price customers pay is less. One example is mass produced CPUs.
jenriquez
05/13/07
sean_p_tweedy: people already know that. We're not talkiing about price increases (taxes, shipment) but price disccounts (offers, buy 2 and get a nice price) :). Anyway, Dell computers have good prices when compared to HP ones in Mexico.

It depends if the school or college is covered, try going to www.dell.com and check if under education your school offers any.

"Someone pays for all those discounts - and that someone is whomever pays full price."
Who pays "full price"? Dell constantly offered discounts on its website, in the US and worldwide. Unfortunately, that changes a buyer's mindset from "Dell has good computers" to "Dell has cheap computers". You have a mistaken belief that sales of one type "subsidizes" another sale.

"It's also true that as the sales volume of a product increases, the unit cost and the price customers pay is less. One example is mass produced CPUs."

You are assuming that all sales of all types have the same incremental cost, and that simply isn't true. Comparing CPU chips to computer systems is a terrible analogy.

Apple also offers discounts not just to students, but to teachers as well. My husband can walk into an Apple store and immediately get $200 off a new laptop just by proving he's a high school teacher. You can make a case about someone paying for all the discounts, but let's face it, elementary and high school teachers get paid crap, and if they can get a computer at a discount to help them be better educators, i'm happy to pay for their discount. Dell should offer a similar program for teachers.

ensignredshu: "but let's face it, elementary and high school teachers get paid crap"

So do janitors. So do maids. So do gas station attendants. So do coffee shop waitresses.
If this is supposed to be a low-income subsidy why not extend it to all low-income jobs?

Student discounts in europe like apple please

So, after reading most of this I have this to say: make it easier to do. When you go to look at student discounted products Dell requires that you validate as a student. That makes sense for them as a business. As a customer though, I had to wait a while while they decided I was a student... I ended up going and getting an older system off of ebay *which was lame*. That kind of validation should be left until the last step of the process!
dustyd_64
06/08/07
Nobbewan, there is actually a much quicker way to validate status, and all you have to do is get the information on your school's EPP.
