Great Idea for Ultra Mobile Computer

532 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies by snowbob230 02/18/07

A low cost quality UMC. I would love to have one, but the cost is way too high for me. If you could make a UMC for under 1 K that had a GPS Wireless and bluetooth I would be thrilled.

< $500 Windows Mobile 6 UMPC (Axim with a keyboard?)

I would like to buy a UMPC with an ~8-inch screen that I could use as a means to access the Internet via 802.11. The device could run Windows Mobile 6 or Windows XPe.

Think of it as a 'large' AXIM with a keyboard. The device would be perfect for browsing, checking e-mail, chatting, etc. and would cost less than $500.

Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC)

Hi,

my customers are using Pocket PC /Windows Mobile 5 devices with applications wrote by me but they need a bigger display and a more powerful device. a Tablet PC is too havy and for the the new Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) is the perfect solutions.

I'm already testing Samsung Q1 but I'd prefer a Dell device.

Ultra Mobile PC

With Development halted in the PocketPC area I feel that UMPC is the next big step. With advancements in technology over the past few years and the proliferation of broadband access this technology needs to return to the marketplace. Remember the HandHeldPC from the early 90's Now it is a fully featured Windows (or Linux) PC. Dell needs to step into this market.

Ultra Mobile PC

Microsoft made a big deal about this edict that hardware makers should build Ultra Mobile PCs, but so far I haven't seen any compelling products. There really is just no creativity in this segment that really demands it. Some ideas:

- A UI specific to the UMPC form factor. Nokia did a great job with the Hildon UI on the Nokia 770 and N800, both of which I own.

- A clamshell design with keyboard, like the old Sony picturebook.

- No built in keyboard, but one that can fold up and snap on securely. I use a fold up bluetooth keyboard with my Nokia, but its always a bit precarious.

- Network sync software that runs on the UMPC itself (in pull mode). This is for reading web sites, etc, when you cannot get a connection, like on a train.

- Voice recognition

I like my Nokia because its so small I can put it in a backpack and use it anywhere without thinking about it or it weighing a lot. UMPCs are something between a PDA and PC, but really are neither.

Great idea. I'd like to add a few clarifying points:

It's not just the UI that's specific to the UMPC for the Nokia n800 --it's the OS. Maemo is an OS that is built for the Internet Tablet, based on Linux. It's totally open source, so there is no reason that Dell couldn't build a system that ran it.

I like the UMPC idea, but making based on an MS desktop OS is dead in teh water (well, not dead, but very limited) The problem is that the OS is so resource intensive. Now you can run WinXP on an UMPC, but it takes $1500, it's bigger than I'd like, and has nothing like the battery life I'd like. Sure, harware will jsut get cheeper, smaller and require less power in the future, but then the OS is getting bigger too. how long will it be before we will get an UMPC that can run Vista? By then, there will be THe next generation OS that will be even more bloated! Base it on Linux, and you can trim it down to run on handheld harware -- NOW.

The Nokia n800 is a great hardware platfrom, and there is a LOT of room for growth. I think they've hit the nail on the head for the base version, but expandability options would be great -- how about:

One with a thumb-keyboard
A snap-on hard drive (with built-inbattery) -- that would make a great media player.
The ability to plug in a Card for direct cell-network internet access?
A port to hook it staight up to a projector.
I'm sure there's other ideas -- let's make Maemo a platform to really grow on!

UMPC - Ultra Mobile PCs

There are may companies that are producing UMPCs (ultramobile pcs), when is Dell going to oin the market.
Also, why does dell not enter the tablet market. This is a huge market, students, schools, universities, hospitals, doctors, lawyers, and may other markets like pilots and and now cars for nav and music.
Most compaies at least have one convertiable table, but dell has nothing. Whay has dell choosen to not enter this market and drive the dersire for tables further. I love my Dells but if dell does not produce a tablet or umpc in the next 6 months I will find another manufactuer for my computer needs.

I am looking for a small umpc that has more power than a pda but is just as portable. Does dell have plans to make these?
