I think everyone agrees here. No McAfee. i cant unistall my copy because it will take all my settings for the Microsoft firewall with it. That includes my outlook settings, internet, and just about every program. Why cant i say "no McAfee please"??? is it really that hard? use Norton....

lindahewitt 02/19/07	Dell customers should have the option of selecting no AV software, so that they can choose Kaspersky, Panda, NOD32, or OneCall. McAfee and Norton are the two worse products and these vendors are not even capable of writing an uninstall program that will uninstall everything pertaining to their program. If Dell really wants to restore its reputation for quality, then why in the world would you push such bad software onto your customers. There are plenty of good AV vendors, but Dell promotes some of the worse, just because these vendors are paying Dell to put their software onto their customers computers, which then forces them to waste their time trying to get rid of these products. IMO, there is no way that either McAfee or Norton would have their market share, if they were not bribing the hardware vendors to load their inferior products onto brand new computers. In effect, Dell is endorsing these vendors and their products. If Dell really wants to be # 1, then they need to focus on quality in all areas.

sjss 02/22/07	I'd second the more choices or the "no av" option. I understand the later would require a higher warantee cost, as most users actually need an AV with their use habits. But replacing McAfee with Norton, without options is just bad. I will never install norton on my computer again, with how unstable it is, and it makes any system I had put it on.

keter 02/23/07	No antivirus on a new system is a recipe for disaster -- noobs will connect to the Internet and become infected almost immediately and this will cause all manner of tech support headaches, so this can't be an option. Ship with free Avast! and Windows Defender installed, and include promo CDs of premium products from your business partners for those who select no antivirus.

wiicsilver 02/24/07	Why would you want to put Norton on your computer. You might as well package it up all nice and send it to Symantec, because once their software is on your computer, they own your computer. Every year, Norton Internet Security gets worse.
agret 02/24/07	NOD32 > AVG > Norton > McAffe Norton is the biggest resource hog and it is so slow at doing anything plus you have to re-new your license every year. You usually do this by upgrading to their new yearly version which has just gotten slower.
blackflag 02/26/07	I agree on the "No McAfee" thing.. The end user should have the choice when it comes to anti-virus.. Expand the Dell experience by adding the option to choose what anti-virus software can come pre-installed in your products and you will have a lot of happy Dell customers.. I personally like Avast 4 Home and would rather have that installed on my system... AVG 7.5 is another good anti-virus program...

lindahewitt 03/05/07	I prefer either Panda Platinum or Kaspersky Security Suite for workstations and Microsoft's Antigen - ForeFront for servers. I just installed Antigen, when I deployed Exchange 2003 and it really rocks. For Exchange 2007, Antigen's name changes to ForeFront. Antigen includes 5 malware engines including Kaspersky and Sophos. When any malware is released in the wild, Kaspersky has an excellent record of deploying a solution in less than 4 hours after the malware is released. No other vendor even comes close. I have used Panda for five plus years and I have been very happy with it, but I am planning to put Kaspersky Internet Suite on at least one of my computers. There are two other things that are really great about Kaspersky. I ran their free online scanner and it detected one item. I sent an email to them and in 1.75 hours, I received a complete and comprehensive response. Now, that is what I call superior tech support. The other thing that I like is that their website provides full and complete documentation, this is another refreshing aspect of this company. I have no problem recommending any company that provides an excellent product, tech support and documentation. If the documentation is well structured (includes all possible error codes, trouble-shooting tips, good TOC and index), then customers will refer to the documentation first before placing a telephone call. Tip: Good structured documentation = comprehensive and top-notch development standards. Companies that fit that profile in the past have been WordPerfect, PowerQuest and Dell. Both WordPerfect and PowerQuest companies have been sold. Current companies that fit that profile are Raxco, and Kaspersky.

Especially when I was forced to have a 15 months subscription, then after formatting the computer, I discovered that the supplied CD was a 3 month deal or something, and I have to go through another hassle to prove that I actually have the subscription blah blah blah. WHAT A HASSLE!!!

erikmurr 03/15/07	What ever happened to the option to not have any Anti-Virus software installed? I use a corporate edition anti-virus solution so I don't want anything pre-installed. Of course the cheapest option is not even the brand I use so it causes a problem.
jmxz 03/15/07	Dell almost installs the one that pays them the most to do so - either up front or as a percentage of subscriptions bought. I would like it if they made this transparent, though: * Get McAfee - save $X because McAfee will pay $Y for every upgrade/subscription sold * Get Norton - save $X because Norton will pay $Y for every upgrade/subscription sold * No AntiVirus - add $Z because no AntiVirus vendor is subsidizing the machine .... * Get Vista Basic - save $X because Microsoft will pay $Y for every upgrade sold * Red Hat - save $X because Red Hat will pay $Y for every support package * No OS - add $Z because no OS vendor's subsidizing the machine
jtoegel 03/16/07	Norton is a piece of shit, especially norton internet security. It slows down the computer and you can't remove it! It's digging itself so much into the system like no other program. Please include something like NOD32 or AVG, but neither Norton nor McAfee.

doomlord52 03/25/07	when you select "None" they give you Mcaffe...... thats why this thing exists..... i specifically click "none" and got 4 or 6 months of Mcaffe.... and i cant un-install it, because it will take my microsoft AV settings with it........

adreka 04/20/07	Plus McAfee doesn't work properly with windows vista. It makes browsing the internet unbearably slow unless you disable the phishing filter. I've added this as a seperate idea as I didn't see this suggestion before posting it.

deusx 04/21/07	Nortan is even worse than macaffe. There should be an option for NO Anti-Virus software pre-installed. And also options for diffrent anti-virus programs if you HAVE to have one installed. (I personnally use Avast!)
badblood 04/21/07	AVG all the way for me. Norton is worse than McAfee, and McAfee is terrible, which makes Norton 'really' terrible. I like ZoneAlarm for the firewall, but still doesn't run in Vista.... No reason to beleive that Microsoft's firewall is any better than it used to be, certainly not as easy to use as zonealarm.

And I fix computers for a living (including dell warranty repairs) its small fast accurate, easy, free, installs and unistalls cleanly and rarely gets broken. well designed software. If Dell is serious about getting back to their roots, then they will go out of their way to research, test and promote well designed software. not just the big names.

chacar 05/07/07	In my case prefer the tools one on one do not integrate all because when fail some tool all crash. Consider other parners to give us much better portection and do not sacrifice the hardware. I use this antivirus with 128 ram of memory and a pentium 3 process: AVG, AVAST and PC-Cillin. The data base es so good.
twocows 05/12/07	McAfee is bad, I'll admit that. However, NSB: Norton Sucks Bad. If you don't want viruses, use AVG Anti-Virus Free. If you don't want to have viruses, but want something more professional, use Kaspersky Internet Security. If you really don't want viruses, get Linux.

lindahewitt 05/17/07	I would like to see Dell allow a customer to decide on NO AV software or select from offerings from Kaspersky, Panda or NOD32..... but this would not be trial software or evalualtion software. This would be handled in the same way that a customer selects Office 2003 Professional or any other software package.
reg 05/18/07	How about every time a Virus program hits your PC, Microsoft Pays you $20 for finding it. Then Microsoft changes windows so that particular virus fails and can not infect / alter your computer? If a automobile manufacturer sold cars that crashed 3 times in a day - they would all end up in prison. WHY do people accept such shoddy performance when it comes to software. It is time Microsoft be held accountable for the abysmal lack of quality and reliability in their product. There should be No such thing needed as 'Anti-virus' software. Windows is a security abomination, horribly designed. If it was a Bank ATM machine - you could point your cell phone at it and money would spit out on the ground!

They don't do that because they find it more profitable to sell upgrades with the "this time we're more secure" sales pitch to businesses they've been using since Win95. If they actually ever delivered a secure OS you could kiss all their corporate buyer upgrades good bye.

lindahewitt 08/26/07	I know that Dell is paid to do this but this is really a conflict of interest in terms of their customers. Would they put a crappy hardware component, which is prone to frequent failures in their computers? The answer is no because it would cost Dell money in terms of tech support and replacing the hardware components. However, somehow the bean counters at Dell thinks that it is OK to do this to their customers because it is their customers, who have to asborb the costs in terms of time and replacing these AV products. That is after they have done considerable research to uninstall either the Norton or McAfee products, Neither of these companies have figured out how to write an uninstall program that works. And then Dell wonders why they are losing market share. Dell needs to be focused on quality in all areas and there is money to be made by promoting quality. To continue down their present course will only result in more bad press and declining market share and profits.

" I thought the "yes" answer to this question is THE key innovation Dell had in contrast to IBM and Apple who seem to sell more solid but higher cost hardware. Dell's success for many years was similar to Microsoft in that they both observed that the market for inexpensive lesser-quality computing products was actually much larger than the market for high-end expensive ones.

After quite a bit of troubleshooting I discovered that the phishing filter in McAfee was conflicting with the phishing filter in IE7 which is included in Vista. Having switched off the filter in McAfee the problem has been resolved. I have subsequently discovered that it seems to be a common problem with Vista and MacAfee yet Dell are still supplying the software together. I am lucky that I am an IT professional so had the necessary skills to troubleshoot the issue but your average user would find this issue very frustrating and I wouldn't be surprised if they are claiming their new purchases are faulty and are requesting them to be returned. Please stop providing incompatible software!

lindahewitt 11/22/07	We have been telling Dell this since 2-17-07. I guess the only thing that Dell will pay attention to is when customers start returning their brand new computers because they have all of this junkware installed on it, which the customer stated they did not want. This includes Norton and McAfee. The customer ought to be able to state explicitly what they want installed (such as OS, Office) and Dell needs to honor these requests. If they don't, then they can deal with the consequences of either businewss going elsewhere or returned merchandise.
