Dump the little books and leaflets that come with every dell

613 points posted to Environment, Desktops and Laptops by mobcdi 02/20/07

How about not shipping all those little leaflets in multiple languages that no one reads anyway with every dell. It should be possible to create a pdf of all the necessary regulatory information and have that displayed on the first boot.

It would save money for dell in printing and shipping costs and that might mean cheaper pc's

Dell used to be one of the companies that produced some of the best documentation. When I got my new Dell computers, it was very disappointing to see this small pamphlet which is produced in 4 languages. Dell needs to go back to producing quality documentation. Basic documentation should be in English with no other languages in English speaking countries. Enclose the documentation for the primary language in the country that the computer is being shipped too.

If documentation is well structured and comprehensive, your customers will use it but it needs to be of the quality that won STC international awards for years.

When I received my new computers, I had a question about the cables enclosed and I went to the documentation to figure out what I needed to do in terms of assembling my new computer. Imagine my surprise that there was nothing about these cables in the documentation. So I had no choice but to call customer support.

Doing a poor job costs Dell in so many dozens of ways.

Hi Linda,

How about a demo miniCD? with details of how to proceed. You are right Dell is known for it's good documentation. "Basic documentation should be in English with no other languages in English speaking countries. Enclose the documentation for the primary language in the country that the computer is being shipped too". A good idea indeed........;-) ;-).

Simple & clear documentation is always welcome. It needs to be short and sweet.

They have to keep those in there for legal purposes mainly, and half of it is for setting up the computer before you even turn on the power. Just because you know what to do does not mean that the average Joe on the street has any clue about what to do.

A choice during setup as to which language to include instructions in would make sense to me. that way, even though you live in an English speaking country, you can still get the instructions in your native language. A series of check boxes on the add-ons page would allow you to receive instructions in one, two or ten languages, depending on your need. And if you don't want them, don't check any and they will be included as a PDF in case you change your mind.

Hello Kokuryu,

Yeah I agree to you. A choice of language can be taken for consideration.

I agree. Sometimes it's nice to have something on a piece of paper to read it properly, but it's disappointing to see a waste paper bin full of all the leaflets and booklets that arrive whenever we receive a large Dell order.

Make them an OPTION too - for large orders:

Include Paper instructions ( $1 )
All instructions in .PDF on the Hard drive C:\ root level. ( $0 )

If I am setting up 120 brand new Dell PCs - of the same Model, really - I only need 1 copy of that stuff!
