Exclude Crapware as an Option (AOL, Works, Semantic, etc)

591 points posted to Sales Strategies, Software by maruser 02/20/07

As an IT professional who lives on DELL products, I spend more time uninstalling Crapware (AOL, Works, Semnatic) than installing the software that I actually need. What a waste.

It would be great if customers are given the option to Crapware or not.
Most will opt not to have i.

This should be an all or nothing on the Crapware.

I agree whole-heartedly! Please, please, please. Allow us to exclude any software. I don't need/want either AOL or Earthlink, Macaffee or Symantek, Even on a home network with only two other computers, and a single router, I've got to uninstall this stuff (especially the firewalls - don't work with my routers built-in firewall) before I can connect. I've got my internet security suite. I don't need/want another one at the cost of trying to get it off my brand-new computer!

The problem is that one person's crapware is another person's important feature.

While you might want windows straight out of the box; most end users want their DVD player to be able to watch DVDs and their computers to be able to access their SATA drives -- neither of which works on a straight Windows install without third party software.

Also, All this pre-installed software is paid for and subsidizes the cost of the hardware. I hope Dell keeps going with whomever pays them the most to keep the system costs as low as possible.
