MagSafe - Magnetic powercord plug

1220 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power by thorin_2 02/21/07

Awesome feature that all my Mac user friends have on their MacBook Pros.

From WIkipedia.com: The MagSafe connector is a new power connector introduced in conjunction with the MacBook Pro at the MacWorld Expo in San Francisco on January 10, 2006. The MagSafe connector is held in place magnetically. As a result, if it is tugged on—for instance, by someone tripping over the cord—it comes out of the socket safely, without damaging it or the computer or pulling the computer off its table or desk.

I checked, and Apple doesn't have a patent on it...yet. They have a patent pending status however there are plenty of examples of prior art. See http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20060112/1555226.shtml for example.

Breakaway Notebook power connector

I think think that there should be a breakaway design for the power connector because most damage that occures to dell systems is power connector seperaton frome the motherboard... This is what the compitition has developed with a magnetic connection... Works sweet... Thanks for your time...

I think if were just like the compitition it would be a copyright infringment.. I know with a little thinking the dells we buy can be inproved some to prevent damage to the mainboard... I just liked the connector for the compitition i know that there are rules and regulations regarding useing an idea already in use that has leagal bindings...

There is a reason why these are for sale. I do like the idea, reduced consumer cost on replacing those motherboards or trying to solder the new DC pin.

It is still a dupe.

of course apple thought of it about in what 03' 04'.. if anyone thought of it on this sight it would still be a dupe a dupe to apple magsafe i just want a better power connector for when i m plugged in i dont have to worry about the plug snapping off an inportant piece of my systemboard if it takes a dupe to get so be it. I am asking dell to work on there own solution not to copycat a copetiters idea..

Make a laptop with a power connection similar to Apple's MagSafe

A couple of weeks ago I was stuck in a small equipment closet working on some routers, and I tripped over my power cord, not once, but twice! Luckily my Latitude D820 is a tank. It fell from more than 4 feet both times and landed on the screen once. The only thing that happened was that the clips on one side of the case popped out, which I was able to fix by squeezing the case gently. If the power cord would have popped off like on the MacBooks, it never would have happened.

Well, Apple has it patented and has no plans to license it.

It's patent pending, and Apple has a poor chance of getting the patent due to prior

Patent Pending on "countertop deep fryers" whatever those are. It's patent pending for use on Laptops. I have faith in our poor Patent Offices that the Patent will be granted to Apple, if it hasn't already.
