Linux Printing Solutions

1760 points posted to Linux, Printers and Ink, Service and Support by jfelisky 02/21/07

I have a Dell 3100cn laser printer, which was a nice purchase until I dropped Windows XP and moved to OpenSuSE on my home computer.

I've tried a lot of different message boards looking for a way to keep that printer, but I'm so frustrated with Dell's lack of Linux support that I have to consider HP, since the LaserJet family is more broadly supported.

Full Linux Printer support

All Dell printers should have free GPL'ed drivers for GNU/Linux.

By all I mean, photoprinters, multifunction, monochrome and color lasers and regular desktop ink-jets.

This would make Dell my definite brand of choice for printers.

Linux drivers for Dell All in one Printers

My Inspiron-9400 has a dual-boot system.

Primary boot with Linux-Mandriva-2007, secundary boot with Win-XP-Home.

Mandriva works better for me than Win-XP, only I have a Dell-All-in-One-printer (Photo 944) that doesnot work with Mandriva because there are no linux drivers for it.

When Dell develops linux drivers for the most important types of Linux (i.e. Ubuntu, Red-Hat, Suse, Mandriva and some more) everything should go better for Dell as well as for their customers who want to work with Linux.

I dual-boot with XP and Ubuntu, but also have an AIO 922. Although an old printer now, I would like Linux drivers/ software for it comparable to the Windows versions. AIO printers use proprietary protocols, so cannot be supported by the opensource community by its own. Even something as simple as providing the documentation for developers would be a big step forward.

Provide Linux Drivers for your Printers

I have just bought 3 laptops (two XPS M1330, and one Inspiron 1525) and an all in one printer MFP 1125
I installed Ubuntu (since I'm in Mexico I was forced to buy Vista installed).
And it's imposible to print on the MFP 1125.
It comes without Linux Drivers, and I can not find a driver on the net....

These case proves that linux users buy hardware (I have just spend 4,200 USD), and we deserve printer divers!

Check http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting for printer support.
Do you know if the 1125 is functionally similar to the 1100 or 1110? Those printers are shown as supported.

( I buy a lot of hardware from Dell, but the one thing I don't buy are the printers. Support from Dell for anything other than Windows is usually abysmal. Usually, the only hope is finding someone else who worked out a solution themselves. )

We recommend using a Dell printer which includes a PostScript engine, if you're running Linux. We're well aware that we don't have printer drivers for Linux for our inkjet product line, and are working to add that support over time.

matt_d: Then it will be very usefull to tell on the printer description that it includes or not a postscript engine, I don't remember I have seen it, is it there?

mexlinux, yes, it's on the "Tech Specs" tab of each printer.

@Owen, it Mostly works for Dell 3100cn, but the output shown is for a Dell MFP-1125 (several ideas were merged), and it does not work there.
