15" XPS Laptop

1440 points posted to XPS products by nosintake 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I think there should be a 15" XPS laptop. There are plenty of companies that have a 15" "gaming laptop". I think there should be a Dell XPS with a rotating camera, 1GB RAM, Blu-Ray player, and 80GB hard drive standard.

I honestly couldn't agree more with this. The current line of 15" systems don't offer much in regards to a gaming style card, and the general concensus is most people prefer to not have abig screen so the system maintains some level of portability. Why Dell leaned away from this I don't know, but it would be a huge win if this was implemented.

This is simply IMO, but when you get smaller than a 15" screen gaming is not always the easiest thing. The added screen size is important and it makes it too difficult for efficiency.

15 Inch XPS Notebook

Dell REALLY needs to release an XPS 1510, or 1410. Going to the XPS line has advantages (4 GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drives, Built in webcams and aircards, Blu-Ray Drives) but the major disadvantage is that the M1210 may be too small for some consumers, and the 1710 may be too big. There is nothing in the middle of the road for Dell's high-end laptop market. The M1210 is made for mobility, and the 1710 for gaming. Why not have the best of both worlds with a 14 or 15 inch model?

Yes, a 15" XPS please, I need a decent model to replace my 6400. The specs on the 1520 make it feels like a downgrade rather than an upgrade for me.

14 or 15in XPS Notebook

There is a major gap in the product line. Why are there only 2 XPS notebooks, a 12in and 17in. What about the people that want a mid-size notebook. Why not offer a laptop that looks just like the 12in m1210 notebook but is 14 or 15in in size?

I would buy a laptop like that, but not an 12 or 17 version.

What, msbucklin - you aren't counting the M2010? That would put the M1710 as the mid-sized notebook in the XPS notebook offering trio! ROFL.... Seriously, I agree with you that a 15.4" XPS M1510 would be a valuable addition to the XPS notebook lineup. Personally, I'm a big-screen guy, and look forward to purchasing an M1710 with that glorious 1920x1200 17" display (wish it wasn't quite so reflective, though). I'm waiting until Dell updates the M1710, hopefully including an optional A/V Communications Module (with 1.3 MP Logitech webcam, microphone & internal loop antenna for use with an internal Mini-Card cellular broadband modem), nVidia Go 8800, dual-DVI output...the list goes on!

'course you could also consider Dell's Alienware line
http://alienware.com/product_pages/notebook_all_default.aspx
that has 14 and 15 inch notebooks

Yeah they do, but they aren't any better than an Inspiron. 128mb ATI x1400 video card (Inspiron offers 256mb) and to upgrade from 1GB of ram to 2GB they charge $270.

To be honest, I'm seriously considering the Alienware Aurora m9700 vs the XPS M1710. It has most of the features I drool over, and is competitively priced (for a high-performance notebook). I find the pretty chassis just a bit too colorful - if they had an m9700 in basic black, but with the little alien head and it's glowing blue eyes.... Just kidding - looks are low on the consideration list. My biggest issue is the processor choice - there's just no denying that Intel's Core 2 Duo is the current king of the roost, and until AMD finally fires back with something worthy, I'll be transplanting my flag back over at the Intel camp. In any case, I'll be waiting until both Dell and Alienware come out with nVidia Go 8800 models.

ATI makes excellent video cards, and I am truly happy to have two such giants as ATI (just purchased by AMD) and nVidia duking it out to keep great advances and lower pricing happening on the video processing front! I stated nVidia Go 8800 on my last post because it's the only smoking GPU currently out that supports DirectX 10. AMD/ATI is supposed to releasing it's first DX10 offerings very soon - but it's not out yet...and a mobile version is probably even further out. nVidia Go 8800 isn't quite out yet either, but from the online discussions it sounds like it's right around the corner, while there is very little mention of an ATI/AMD DX10 mobile part at all right now....

Here's a "head-to-head" review of the upcoming ATI 2900 XT DX10 desktop offering vs. the 8800 GS - which beats out the 8800, and is supposed to be priced similarly:

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/24/atis-directx-10-card-benched-bests-nvidias-...

When it comes to the top of the heap, it looks like the 8800 GTX is still the champion, though! Here's a comparison of the 2900 XTX vs the 8800 GTX, and the 8800 still comes out ahead despite being the older part:

Between a 12 and a 17, i'd go for a 12. So if a 14 can come by with a 7700 in it, sweet joy! I'd prefer smaller as I need to go my surfing and gaming, even in the washroom :)

XPS 15-inch or 14-inch

I think XPS in 14 or 15 inch would be great idea. I don't want to have a 17-inch with me all the time neither the 12-inch.

it needs a 15,4" notebook with good graphic card!

Yes, 15.4" XPS would be super... Anything under 15" is too small and over 15" is hardly portable. So count me in if it includes at least one DVI/HDMI out, a decent video card option (like 8600 GT), and a hi-res (WUXGA) antiglare screen.

HELLO EVERYONE!!! what about the CPU that's being offered. I was expecting a Santa Rosa platform with the 7000 chipset. The graphics card is a good one, although the screen resolution maybe a little low. I just can't get over the 1.6 GHz processor 5240. I mean even its little brother, the 1330, has got more under the hood than this. I can't believe Dell even published an XPS on their website without the 7000 series chipset. Isn't XPS supposed to be their flagship??? Please tell me that the 7000 chipset is an option in this, If so I'll place an order tomorrow!

j_faust, I responded more fully to your duplicate posting in http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/61776/154_size_XPS_system, but the short answer is yes, 7000 series CPU's are indeed available options on the M1530.
