Merge Alienware & Dell

330 points posted to Dell, Gaming by canondale22 02/22/07

Now that Dell has acquired Alienware, I think the two companies should merge and let Alienware take over Dell's gaming division. Drop or keep the XPS line, but let the gaming line be called Dell Alienware. This would allow Dell to mass market some of Alienware's exclusive home theatre products and take advantage of the slick design and appeal.

Alienware already has a slick design, latest technology, high quality. With Dell's mass production and able to lower the price, Dell could quickly gain more consumer base to help drive their gaming line.

Dell would be better off simply dropping the gaming division, and redirecting those customers to Alienware.

I don't agree with either. I think alienware and dell go after 2 different markets. alienware probably deserves more visibility, though.

Until Alienware's quality, service and support are on par with Dell's, this is a horrible idea. If you every actually purchased an Alienware, you'd know they are teh suck. There are much better products, that actually work, and aren't even considered gaming, made by other companies, including Dell itself.

Yes either the XPS line should go or Alienware should go, trying to turn the computer business into the auto business is absurd, after all the auto business is on the steep downslide what's the difference between a Chevy and a Pontiac! The auto business did that to give the illusion of a competitive maket when it was just a tight oligopoly. Probably better to turn Alienware into Dell's gaming division and iron out all the problems such as Quality control, service, finance and peripherals. Alienware's system of ouside peripherals is a good idea, I tend to use Logitec keyboards and mice! Also Alienware tends to use more modern motherboards and memory, and this is where Dell is a little behind!
Having 2 major competing brands (both owned by the same operator) means that your economy of scale in design, marketing, service and distribution is being lost!
