Dell E-vote on which linux distro Dell will offer- "The Dell Linux Distro Elections"

1050 points posted to IdeaStorm, Linux by arclight 02/24/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Why not have a online E-Vote about which linux distro to offer.

As the Ideastorm community update pointed out, even though there is a lot of interest in "linux"- there is diverse opinions about what is the best distro and which ones Dell should offer. Its not practical to offer all of them, yet in the end any single distro will result in complaints and be a compromise.

Rather then try to decide independently which distro to offer first, host a online e-vote election where distro's can be nominated and run in a large online election.

By having an organized election:
*it will be limited to clear choices (distro's that were nominated)
*Each will get the same exposure to voters, and in the same time frame.

In the long run, any number of distros could be offered but this could help make it clear what distro has a lot of support and take the 'heat' off Dell for whatever choice it does make. If a distro team is angry they did not get elected its the community not Dells fault, and they could always run again next year in another linux election.

Consider this excerpt from the Dell IdeaStorm February 23, 2007 release:

"As this community knows, there is no single customer preference for a distribution of Linux. In the last week, the IdeaStorm community suggested more than half a dozen distributions. We don't want to pick one distribution and alienate users with a preference for another. "

Dell does not have to pick, the community can choose for them with an election.

Linux – We’re listening... Now Tell Us More... : )
The IdeaStorm community’s interest in open source solutions like Linux on Dell platforms has come through loud and clear. Many of you have suggested a survey to help Dell determine which distribution is most popular, and we think that’s a great idea. Based on your idea, we now have a short survey, which will be open until March 23, where you can tell us more about your favorite distribution of Linux, your preferred method of support, and more.

To access our Linux survey, see today’s blog post on Direct2Dell. We hope you’ll continue to be a part of this discussion on Direct2Dell and IdeaStorm, and check back for more details as we gather your input.

Here are the links (survey ended)

One Dell system - one vote.

That's a good idea. Personally, I'd like Dell to offer a selection of a few distributions, to cater to different people's tastes. If this vote does take place, I'd like to nominate GNewSense (http://www.dellideastorm.com/article/show/63082/Preinstall_gNewSense_on_lapto...) as it's 100% free (as in freedom) software, and it works very nicely (it's based on Ubuntu).

It really doesnt matter. The opinions on the comments state quite clearly that regardless of what flavour of linux we personally enjoy - what we want is for Dell to offer Ubuntu to the mass market. Dell execs have read these comments and come up with the twisted interpretation above.

This is totally silly, since all of the distros together have far more in common (kernel + drivers) than any 2 given versions of Vista, so their argument is total crud.

We could send Dell a petition of 10 million names, all signed in blood .. and Dell would read that as :

"Our customers seem to be asking for more Vista and less choice"

I not only think this is good idea ..I think we should really be pushing Dell to develop their OWN Linux distro.. DeLLinux.. this may be the BEST option for Dell.. by banding together a large consortium of NON Microsoft companies to work together on this distro.. Open Office and other OpenSource programming could be vastly improved..and right now OpenOffice will do all most small businesses NEED anyway..it is about all I ever use!

Instead of the community to choose, why not let the end user choose by himself, on system purchase, or even better, let the market do it? An election of a single distribution will not say whether this distribution is the best fit or not; the linux market is way too young in this regard.

I believe Dell would better focus on making their systems fit with a standard setup of Linux distributions, so that any distribution that matches this standard can fully run and use the Dell hardware, than just electing a single or two distributions. That is a first thing, allowing Dell to sell pre-installed systems.

A second thing, allowing Dell to sell dedicated support with these systems, would be that Dell makes a deal with one, or several Linux editors, so that direct support processes are defined, shared and made available to customers.

Totally agree with steveoc...Ubuntu clearly makes the most sense for the general market - just look at the forum discussion so far.
Sadly I don't think Dell is really serious about this.
If you want to buy a Dell they're still going to make you pay for Vista (and all the pre-installed crudware).

I think some form of E voting would be a good way of determining which Linux Distro's are the most popular.

Yes, this one needs voting up.

Actually it doesnt need to be up voted, since Dell doesnt actually base any of it's Idea's in Action based on votes. They just need to read it.

So far, I've seen little action ON the 'Ideas in Action' ... it's taking awhile to even show comments in 'most recent first' order. Last week, they promised a 'demote' button and THAT hasn't arrived. I wonder how they developed this site to begin with? Do they need a programmer?????

Voting up at least indicates INTEREST. And, I believe they at least NOTICE that. If they don't, they might as well shut this site down... it's only a sham.

Where did they post the promise of demote button ???

Found it! Check the "moderator update" button...

I still think that Dell should work out a DeLLinux distro of their own..involve the rest of the Biggies like AutoDesk and maybe Google..and ??? Get a big consortium together to work it out.. something that will run Adobe and AutoDesk software besides having to use Windows..PLEASE..

It would be far better for Dell to partner with such as Ubuntu-based Linspire for a Dell-branded install OF Linspire... this would SAVE Dell all the complexity of configuring and supporting the distro, while providing any customization they desired.

I believe Linspire would be more than happy to meet this need.

As far as Linux is concerned can Dell possibly on its own create a unique Dell Linux that would better the Linux distros already available? I think not. Albeit they might be able to assist the Linux community in prying hardware info out of sometimes recalcitrant hardware vendors :>)

Could Dell concentrate on hardware compatability to match a targeted group of Linux distros? That seems managable.

Could Dell make money on a low end linux machine targeted at the basic "SOHO" productivity environment, in addition to its current corporate Linux efforts? I don't know. I can think of 3 market segments that might go for the same scaleable linux machine provided that machine could run an appropriate set of Linux distros, e.g.

[1] The fastest growing group of new computer users are retirees, many of whom are on limited budgets and haven't a need for advanced features (and they have built in basic tech support from children and grandchildren). Not to mention already existing home users whose machines are becoming technically outdated and who dread having to lay out larger sums of money for Vista compatible hardware components that they just don't need or want. And there are the home multimedia people who equate Vista to the Black Plague and just refuse to go there.
[2] There are a lot of high school/college students out there on limited budgets also that just aren't into "hacking" and "building", but still need a desktop or laptop that manages everyday educational productivity requirements at a reasonable price point (think future decision makers).
[3] There are a lot of small businesses and not-for-profit groups that need much the same computer productivity capabilities for their businesses as the education group needs. A lot of smaller governmental units could easily equate to "SOHO" environments also.

Each of these groups might choose a different Linux distro, but it would seem that one could design a scalable linux machine that could readily accommodate a handful of distros that focus on the needs of a group of defined target market segments.

If that's where Dell is headed with their Linux distro survey, then I think they are on the right track. It will never be their largest profit center I'm guessing, but it might be a profitable one if done correctly.
