Dell OS

-10 points posted to New Product Ideas, Operating Systems by juggernaut 02/24/07

Rather than installing Linux and/or Windows why not bring out a Dell OS? Base it on one of the BSD operating systems, make good and sure that the OS is standards compliant, and load it with good open source software.

Make sure that it's designed with the user in mind (unlike Windows and Linux). In other words rather than installing Mac OSX, come up with Dell OS.

Then hire some programmers to build custom apps for Dell OS. Be creative - what would be really neat? What would be really useful? Possibly start a site like this and get user feedback as to what would they would really like.

Arclight,

I think that you missed my point entirely. While Dell could come up with their own Linux Distro, or (if Apple was agreeable) license OSX, neither choice would be in the best interests of Dell, or Dell's customers. What Dell needs is it's own Unix, like OSX, Solaris, Aix, etc., which is designed for ease of use, for both business and personal customers.

By basing the OS and one of the BSD systems, maintaining full POSIX compliance, and using GCC as the base compiler, it would make designing software for the OS simple (most Linux and BSD programs could be ported quickly), it would be stable (unlike Windows) and proof against virii, trojans, spyware, etc.

In other words - Dell should base it's marketing on what Apple is doing, and dump Microsoft. Oh, it would probably be a good idea for Dell to toss some money at VMWare so that a Dell OS version would be available - that way if you had to run a Win 95/98/ME, Win NT/2K/XP, or DOS application you could. But the base OS should be something that is different. Like Apple did, select your targets (Video compositing and Graphic arts are two things that Apple picked, possibly Dell should pick Presentations, Databases, and Mathematics/Spreadsheets). Dell could either

1) develop the software itself
2) work with an Open Source project
3) hire a company that is expert in the field

The OS should ship with a wide variety of standard features, so that a computer out of the box is useful (a deal with Sun over Open Office/Star Office is one possibility).

Basically Dell has to diferentiate themselves from Lenovo, HP, etc., by providing a premium product, with premium software.
