'No RAM' option for people who upgrade with their own RAM

230 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops by arclight 02/25/07

Have option for 'no RAM' when configuring system memory. For those that go and buy new RAM independently, the minimum OEM RAM just has to be taken out.

There is no sense in forcing people to buy RAM they don't want, and Dell could still make money by splitting the cost savings of not buying/installing RAM with the consumer.

All that wasted OEM RAM ends up on ebay, the trash, or sitting in drawer somewhere anyway. Perhaps offer it in 'advanced user' configuration area, to help avoid less tech savvy people getting confused by the choice.

I can't believe that more people haven't voted on this.

I like the idea and voted for it, I however think Dell will consider it a warranty nightmare and an added cost for them. I am sure their in factory testing of the system would have to be changed to pull the ram out. I cant imagine them shipping a system without powering it up and running some kind diagnostics before shipping it.

they could test it with ram then take it out. I think the main idea is that Dell overprices the RAM so badly that some people would rather buy it elsewhere.

That would be an added cost for them to install/remove the ram after testing.

Or they could be more reasonable with the pricing.

They do look interesting. I didn't know ram was a big source of heat.

It's not - basically for great looks and over clockers...

When I brought my laptop, I would have liked to have a no RAM option, as then I could have brought 2GB of third party RAM (then $160) and paid less in total. Many more enthusiasts would buy laptops from Dell if they could purchase laptops without RAM, as then they would see Dell's laptops as being more cost efficient.
