I like the DRM hardware

TPM is cool in a research-y kind of way. Of course, I want control over the TPM, and I only run open-source software, so I guess that's not really what TPM is *for* but you can use TPM to make your platform more secure for *you* which is good.

Many Dell machines now come with TPM (Trusted Platform Modules) already built-in. TPM, TC and DRM are linked as similar or supporting

The OEMs are the only ones with enough power to pressure the chip vendors to release their documentation!

Vendors: we don't want your source code and we don't want NDAs. All we want is the complete documentation of your hardware so we can build our own stable and maintainable opensource drivers!

If Dell wants to let its customers satisfied with its new Linux PCs offering, it MUST make vendors provide full and free (both in the sense of freedom - i.e. not under NDA - and in the sense of price) documentation. The rest (hardware support and opensource drivers) will come along.

Cast your vote for free hardware documentation! Dell's Linux PCs offering will be completely useless without proper hardware support...

I do not want DRM in my machine, not because I plan to do illegal things with it,but because it's MY machine.
i do not feel anyone has the right to spy on me, or tell me how to use my own machine in my own house.
I no longer use Microsoft products because of WGA.

It might be best to leave this choice up to the computer purchaser.

Many people want to play commercial DVDs and CDs on their computers, and if DRM is the only possible way they can do this now, give them that option. However, anyone who does not need or want DRM should also have an easy way to choose not to have any DRM hardware or software installed on any computer they purchase. The key idea here would be for Dell to offer those buying computers real choice as soon as possible about DRM hardware and software until the DRM issue itself becomes history.

I personally believe that DRM will disappear quickly as customer dissatisfaction with DRM continues to increase and more key decision makers in the industry (like Steve Jobs) "run the numbers" and look at issues like brand image, marketing and promoting new artists, expanding distribution channels, etc., and everyone begins to agree that there are much more cost-effective business models than DRM that will bring additional benefits to all concerned, the end users, hardware and software manufacturers, content distributors, content producers, and artists/developers.

i'm unsure if a non drm hardware option is feasible as vista requires drm hardware from the kernal level. While linux may not, it relys on pc windows compatible hardware --- seems like this may largely depend on hardware manufacturers offering a non pc specified hardware for linux without the drm -- this may be to costly for hardware manufacturers to offer --- there also is licensing agreement between microsoft and hardware manufacturers that has certain restrictions relating to supply of non drm hardware to open source community --- It would be a nice option for linux --- The bigger issue is that vista requires all pc hardware to have drm --- thus drm hardware is required for entire industry --- even for linux as linux uses pc microsoft compatible hardware. I dont particularly like the situation --- but dont know if there is a solution so long as microsoft spec is requirng drm hardware.

I don't like to be restricted. Thats what DRM is for. It don't matter how much you secure/restrict your stuff. If people think it can, they do it. Like stealing from a homeless person or take something from a serial killer. One feels less as bad as the other. Moral issues...
