Where is the innovation?

160 points posted to Desktops and Laptops by gothamtech 02/26/07

I've been upset at Dell for many, many months, so much so that I've moved away to a competitor for my personal use and for all of my clients. There are several reasons, but a BIG one is complete lack of innovation. Here are some innovations I would like to see:

Notebook Improvements:

- Backlit Keyboard (IF YOU DO ANYTHING AT ALL, DO THIS!!)

- Software Customizable hotkeys on keyboards

- Fingerprint scanner option

- Built in webcams

Desktop Improvements:

- Full line of chassis design options (For each Dell model there should be a choice of chasis, professionally designed, appealing, and well thought out like what comes out of Apple's design teams)

Bottom line: Dell's product roster is stale and monochromatic. You need to have dedicated design teams who think out of the box, are ahead of the curve, and consistently put new ideas out there. This (and better durability) is the only way you'll be able to compete going forward. JMHO

I totally agree with the Backlit Keyboard. I have a Thinkpad with a built-in light, and the light just reflects off of the keyboard. It makes much more sense to light the keys themselves.
