Not Novell Linux

Novell Linux ?!?!? Don't you get it, we want to have unincumbered Linux on the boxes, Debian, Slackware, Redhat, even Ubuntu or Linspire. Not a Microsoft product. The next thing we know the widget that we develop on our shiney Microsoft/Novell Linux box is owned by Microsoft.

I hope I'm hearing sarcasm and not complete ignorance here. Novell DOES NOT belong to Microsoft, no matter how negatively one might perceive Novell's agreement WITH Microsoft!

That said, however, I also posted an "idea" that Dell should avoid their own agreements with such an encumbered (by controversy, at the least) entity as Novell's SuSe Linux.

Redhat is also commercial....If you are happy to support yourself, OpenSUSE is the way to go, if you need corporate support the look to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) or SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED).

Novell refines contributions, from OpenSUSE and other projects, makes sure they all play nice and then provides managed and supported distributions for those customers that need support. They also pass these refinements back into OpenSUSE for the community to then further develop so the cycle continues.

If I need bleeding edge Linux and am happy to support it myself, I choose OpenSUSE, when I am consulting and need a corporate ready Linux distribution with 24x7 Global commercial support for business then SLES or SLED is the way to go. I guess you could say similar things between Fedora and Red Hat, but the problem is that some hardware vendors do not see the similarities, like they do for OpenSUSE and SUSE.

Using Suse, Linspire or any other distros that have agreements with Microsoft is a bad idea. This will discredit Dells Linux efforts in the community. In the long run the association will catch up with Novell, Linspire and anyone who supports them.
