Dell all-in-one Desktop Computer and printer

380 points posted to Desktops, Printers and Ink by colep04 02/27/07

Why not make an all-in-one (for Consumers) Dell computer (such as the Apple imac) but, also a small added printer in the back of the all-in-one.

Design an XPS 2030 - Better than HP's HDX and price competitive with it.

Look at the HP's HDX:

The Specs to beat or match are:

20.1" Dual Lamp LCD @ 1920x1200.
15lbs.

A centered full keyboard.

Choice of video card:

- 512MB Geforce 8800M GTS (will need a DX10.1/shader 4.1 card which Nvidia doesn't have yet.)
- 512 MB 8800M GTX
-1GB 8800M GTX SLI

Integrated TV tuner.
4 speakers with subwoofer.

Matter of fact, go buy one to figure out how to make a better or similiar unit.

This, the XPS 2010, is so dated:

I totally agree with you I recommended the same thing you should check out my post: Any news about an M2030 notebook?, please vote on it and you should also check out the post: Update for XPS 2010! by rishidell.
We all would love to see that model updated. And I would like to propose now that the 8800M in sli configuration is available to the M1730 that dell shoul put it as an option.
Come on dell the 2010 was a real inovation, keep going. After you released that model almost every respected computer brand followed you with their own models, that a good indicator of the kind of inovation you made. I also insist: make the screen with the 1920x1200 resolution.

yes, yes --> REQUIREMENT:   8800M GTX in SLi !!
I really do like the "centered keyboard" - that is awesome.
It would be nice if the screen could extend upwards as well.

oh, and one more thing, advanced d/dock support for dual monitors would be awesome !

Yeah, I think I feel alseep at the wheel. Forgot to add 8800 GTX. Will edit.

About the centered keyboard: Now that I've seen it, I hate 17" notebooks where you invariably find yourself typing off to the left side if it's a full keyboard. HP did an exceptional job with that HDX.

My concerns with the 8800M GTX is that it's not DX 10.1/shader 4.1 and Dell is going to sell them for a fortune. I'd like to see the option of 8800M GTS 512MB, 8800M GTX 512MB, and 8800M GTX SLI 1GB. To keep prices reasonable.

Edit: And dual monitors aren't a prob from single Nvidia cards... but it is for SLI. Maybe Nvidia will fix that soon.

If it has a linux option I'd buy one. I figure that when Dell actually delivers a better 20" (or more) XPS my (new) M90 will be ready for retirement.

Well, my readings in the past few months really haven't identified compelling reasons for needing shader model 4.1 or the new dx. I could be convinced, but I haven't been yet. Short of engineering apps, I don't even see a reason to upgrade. And, the precision lineups are where they deliver the engineering / modeling support. I'm eagerly awaiting the 3600M, as it happens !   :)

Even the upgrade to DX10 (for games) seems largely unnecessary. I mean, I did hold out for DX10 cards, don't get me wrong. Crysis looks significantly enhanced on an 8800 GTX using 10 vs 9. Probably, we'll have to wait for newer games. I dunno. I'll probably get flamed for not adopting the religion. Besides, the Vista requirement leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I would have switched to Vista someday, anyways, but I didn't want to be forced to.

I really would have considered a 2030 over the 1 730, were it to exist. The graphics card in the 2010 just wasn't good enough. And it seems like a 20" laptop should have plenty of room for SLi and cooling and extreme processors. Maybe it would have detracted from the sleekness.

I agree upon this Idea but I do not suggest designing it for today I suggest pulling it for slighlty more future idea as I understand the sales of a product like this are very slim compared to other laptops.
Designing it with the idea of a future items will give you time to sell out the extra stock of XPS 2010's that you currently have.
Then allow you to send out the ground breaking product.

This ideas shouldn't have been merged. An "all in one computer" is a desktop not a notebook.

Also, why merge and older idea into a more recent one?
