Where we want to go today --- LINUX ----

250 points posted to Linux by nanotech_lizard 02/28/07

I hope Dell doesn't drag it's feet very long. Our company is switching everything to Linux; the first HP servers have arrived and the first desktops, laptops are due to arrive in April and they are not running windows!!! We have already started Star/Open Office, our developement has moved to QT4.2 (TrollTech) and Mono. Killed Exchange for Scalix; 2 MSSQL servers are still running (for now) the rest/future have/will be moved to PostgreSQL and MySQL. I am moving our automation control to Linux (Scadabase). My point is we are retiring all our current Dell Equipment and since Dell is not positioned to meet our needs we chose HP / IBM / Lenovo.
Everything works, VID-EVDO-WiFi etc..... the time and money savings from trying to convert our current Dell systems to Linux is astounding...YOU are missing the point of not only our business but many others. We are a very small company I talked to my Dell rep 02.27.07 and was advised he would keep me informed when Dell could meet our needs; I just wonder if you (Dell) will even make it to the dance. After MS announcement on VM's and that customers were getting more use out of MS software than paid for (see VMware site)... there will never be VISTA on our horizon.
----- SLED/SLES10 --- UBUNTU ---- CentOS ---- Xandros ----- Debian
uhhh HP made some pocket change suportting the FREE DEBIAN ($25mil) and growing ;) and on another note our employees are requesting advice on Linux home computers :)

Hey lizard - that is an awesome success story. DO keep us all in the loop on how it goes.

I have the same issue with my customers - we have been linux at the backend for some time, and now its moving onto the desktop in a big way. Whilst we can roll our own DIY hardware for small rollouts, its a problem when the numbers start scaling up. We are looking at IBM and HP for supply of the replacement Dell kit as well.

HP is a natural fit, because often we are in a mixed backend enviroment with VMS and tru64/HPUX.

Dell have never been in the server space from our point of view - since that has always been VMS/Unix.

It looks like Dell's place on the desktop is now shrinking badly, since Linux on the desktop is becoming a mainstream reality.

SURELY someone at DELL can see the writing on the wall - we are talking about an industry here that is experiencing large growth - the number of players in that market is not changing, and yet Dell's sales, profits, and stock prices are all in a nose dive. This is out of whack with what is going on in the rest of the market. Its time for Dell to admit that it is not a 'Windows World' after all, and get with the program.

Ditch Microsoft or Die.

Step wholeheartedly into Linux offerings and SERVICES ('solution provider') or die...

Keep MS to your heart's content... just open up to the market you've been largely IGNORING.

Yes, there IS a threat from Microsoft, but if Dell leads, the others will HAVE TO follow.

On the other hand, if Dell FAILS to lead, HP will likely pick up the ball and take this potential market FROM them!

UPDATE ---- ERP system Moving to OpenMFG (Linux) even though it runs on WIN/MAC/LINUX we chose Linux after all thats where we want to go... STAR/OPEN office goiong well SLES10/SLED10 going very well the same for UBUNTU and CENTOS. Q3 SPRINT will have an installable package for their AIR CARDS for Linux, no more custom conf. Though we are a small company the Linux solution is really starting to roll and the savings (yes we buy the software / support / training) is tremendous. DELL still missed the BOAT AGAIN as they wouldn't supply LINUX to us so HP got an order for another 42 desktops. Next will be working on our R&D lab conversion. VMWare has been very helpful in project for the R&D Lab (we are a speciality high quality oil manufacturer for industrial and consumer markets)

I strongly urge people to check out OpenMFG.com.... more as we progress ... almost forgot on the side I am helping a large realty company convert ... the mind is being freed one company at a time !!!!
