Better naming conventions for Optiplex and Latitude series (eg, GX620 & D620)

10 points posted to Advertising and Marketing, Latitude products, OptiPlex products by drmaddog 02/28/07

First, of what happened to the GX for the Optiplex series?

GX280, GX620....745? 740?

Also, do not allow product models to overlap between different product types. For example: Optiplex GX620, Latitude D620. This gets confusing when trying to support users who just refer to each machine as a 620.

Thats what happens when the user isnt paying attention. I see where this could get confusing, except for ones a laptop and the other isnt, lol.

Personally I don't find the Optiplex and Latitude naming conventions hard to understand:

Latitudes:
D43x - The ultra mobile model
D53x - Budget version of the 'standard' laptop (this seems to be a old C class chassis)
D63x - The 'standard' laptop issued to regular uses
D83x - The business desktop replacement machine

The 3 means this is the 3rd revision of this chassis type, and I'd assume the D means this is the 4th major chassis change.

OptiPlex:
330 - Budget business desktop
740 - AMD desktop based on 745
755 - Standard Medium/Corporate desktop

As for dropping the GX, it always struck me as pointless, if every OptiPlex model has GX in front of the name, surely it's pointless?

As for confusion between desktops and laptops, it's pretty simple to ask the user what type of machine they have.

Now the new PowerEdge models..... those complicate things....
