Vista

I got this idea from http://badvista.fsf.org/ Before i read this [quote] I thought Vista was great now... well see for yourself.

" * They decide which programs you can and can't use on your computer
* They decide which features of your computer or software you can use at any given moment
* They force you to install new programs even when you don't want to (and, of course, pay for the privilege)
* They restrict your access to certain programs and even to your own data files

DRM is enforced by technological barriers. You try to do something, and your computer tells you that you can't. To make this effective, your computer has to be constantly monitoring what you are doing. This constant monitoring uses computing power and memory, and is a large part of the reason why Microsoft is telling you that you have to buy new and more powerful hardware in order to run Vista. They want you to buy new hardware not because you need it, but because your computer needs it in order to be more effective at restricting what you do.

Microsoft and other computer companies sometimes refer to these restrictions as 'Trusted Computing.' Given that they are designed to make it so that your computer stops trusting you and starts trusting Microsoft, these restrictions are more appropriately called 'Treacherous Computing'."

"Backdoor Shenanigans"

shenanigans - (n.) secret activity or dishonest maneuvering, silly or high-spirited behavior, making mischief.

All closed source software is 'secret' by definition.

The more i here about Vista the more i don't like it.

DRM is just away to restrict users rights.

I have not upgraded to Vista but I am hearing from friends that there is no longer Windows Explorer, so you can't open that when you are trying to find where you saved something. No Windows Explorer, means that you have to use the desktop search engine.

From the early days of Windows, I found out the hard way, that allowing Microsoft to decide where to save a file is not the way, plus it makes it more complicated to have all of your data files together, so that you can do a backup of those files. I set up a subdirectory tree for data files and another for programs on my second hard drive. then I can do scheduled backups to an external hard drive.

Some of the changes in Vista are good

Windows Explorer is still there. Vista is set up differently and takes a little getting used to but I like it alot more than XP. The desktop search is great, and I love the sidebar. Really you can get most of Vista's options with add ons in XP but it is a great package.

OOPS!!! I didn't mean to demote, slip of the mouse.
Open Source Software has a purely economical foundation. It doesn't fight the idea that a product such as software can turn a profit even if it comes in infinite supply. This is what Apple is doing with OS X, Redhat is doing it, IBM, Novell, Google, Sony, HP, Sun Microsystems, Amazon and many many others. Microsoft on the other hand is sporting a business model that succeeds only because people are used to it. In human history it has been impossible to replicate this level of work with such ease. For instance Microsoft Vista cost about a billion dollars to develop and I can sit in my house copying it hundreds of times over, illegally I know, but with a Gnu/Linux distro there is no one trying to fight what my level of skill and resources allows me. Therefore, with Linux I can make copies and distribute them myself, hardware cannot be replicated this way and needs to be maintainable regardless of the software running on it. Windows will lose against OSS it is just a matter of time, Dell has the chance to come away from Microsoft with everything it has worked hard for and Dell needs to do that.

You should edit your post to make clear that you want people to promote your post, or you will just sit near zero. I'm not sure if I should demote it because it's about Vista, or promote it because you were saying Vista was bad. Sorry maybe I'm stupid. I dunno.
