reusable/replacable laptop screens

170 points posted to Environment, Laptops by tomwright 04/01/07

Design laptop screens/monitors to be easily replacable and tranferable between PC's. This would ease repairs when needed and would also lower costs of new laptops by allowing someone to transfer a screen from an old laptop to a new one. This is a big reason why desktops are so cheap, you do not need to purchase a monitor with one as you do with every laptop.

So someone with an older Dell laptop could buy a new laptop, without a lid/screen, and move the entire lid/screen from the old one to the new one. While the current ones would not allow for that, a new design would. Either the entire lid could be moved or perhaps the screen could be inserted into the lid like a giant PCI card. That would allow for redisgn of the case and reuse of the LCD from old to new laptop.

Its actually pretty easy to swap laptop displays. We do it all the time, however we have a good 50+ of each model. (latitude) Pop the keyboard off and uplug the display... take 4 screws out in the back and the entire display comes off. Swap it to the same model.

but that is not as easy as with a desktop. You can do that, I can do that, sn IT support group can do that, but could the average home user do that? At most, it should require removing one edge of the frame and removing the old and popping in the new, much as you would an expansion card in a PC.
