Dell Factory Build: Problems (Optiplex)

120 points posted to Service and Support, OptiPlex products by tleavit 04/16/07

4 out of the last 8 Optiplex we have purchased have serious problems with the factory build of XP. We blow it out and soon after the thing hangs after XP loads past the logo screen (right before ctrl-alt-delete pops up). Example: We received 2 745 Opliplex on Friday (core 2 duo 2.1 ghz). Blew both out. One of them failed in the exact same way that the other 4 Optiplex in the last month or so have failed. We have troubleshot the things for hours in the past with no luck. The only solution is to slap the CD back on it and rebuild again. I said something to our rep and got the old "call support". We are already waiting an extra 2 hours on the box's and don't have that kind of time to deal with help desk guys that by and large do not have the technical skills to tell us anything more than "rebuild it". My network admin staff think its a conspiracy to get Dell to sell us their own custom solutions but that might be far fetched. Get 'er fixed!

We have had no problems at all on the last 10 latitudes we purchsed in the last month or so.

why just stop buying Optiplex and buy dell Dimension or Dell Precision

Corprate workstations. Dimensions = home and Precision = to much for people just using work and exchange :)

We buy Precision when we are looking for CAD spec box's.

The problem disappeared on the last 5 we bought but I just bought another and its right back. Exact same error leading to another factory wipe.

Hi, If any of you are using a symantec product as your antivirus software, you may want to try to edit your registry with this setting. I was able to boot into SafeMode with no problem and added this key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\LANDesk\
VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Storages\Filesystem\RealTimeScan.
Then right click the RealTimeScan key and then select from the list New > DWORD value. Then Type UseVolumeInfoList for the values name and then press <enter>. In the right pane double click on the UseVolumeInfoList value, then in the Value data box type 0 unless its already there (that is type in a zero not an O ) after entering this key reboot your system and VELLA !!!! video.......
Check Document id 2006103112061748 "optiplex 745 computers cannot start in normal mode after installing symantec antivirus Ver 10.1 ( i am running ver 10.2 and had the problem... off of the website it suggests download the Maint patch 1 release 6.. but you cant with ver 10.2... only the Manual reg update works...) Give it a shot instead of rebuilding the whole system... Good luck and God Speed....
again the key is as follows.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE|Intel\LANDesk\VirusProtection6\
CurrentVersion\Storages\FileSystem\RealTimeScan.

Ooops i also forgot to mention that in order to check the document id you must goto Symantecs web site.. Thanks again for posting this problem ... if it wasnt for this post i would have never came across this solution.
Thanks again...

OK... I found one other thing... If you do try my previous entry and it doesnt work there is one other step you want to take... It is updating the Symevent drivers for your symantec application. Use the following Document id.
Document ID: 1998092408260848 from the Symentec web site...
I had a couple machines where i did my first entry fix and it worked fine. Machines still running no issues. Then i also had a few where i did my first entry and the Symevent update and they came back working fine....
Total... it takes about 15 min to do both of these.... its faster then rebuilding the whole thing..... Good Luck....
