Now You Choose – Concept 1

-2110 points posted to Gaming, XPS products by dell_admin1 04/25/07

Participate in the product design process! Dell is using IdeaStorm to decide between two new product design concepts. Vote on your favorite and weigh in to tell us what you think.

When we unveiled the XPS 710 H2C at CES this year, we also uncovered it. There were a limited number of systems sprinkled throughout the show floor that had a clear side panel allowing easy viewing of the patent-pending two-stage H2C liquid cooling system.

Since then, more than a few people have suggested we offer a “panel with a view” as an option for our XPS 710 line. Now we need you to vote for one of these two options and, most importantly, share some reasons why you like it.

This “Now You Choose” vote campaign will be open from Wednesday, April 25 to Friday, May 11. The design that gets the most votes will be featured in a future generation of XPS gaming desktops.

Though I like the concept, but I don't want just a window. If the entire side panel was made to be a see through, I would've definitely gone for it, but I'd stick with the other one with the X. Really Cool! :)

We need more choices!!! What gives you show us just 2 designs and have us pick one.

Let the users submit some designs...

Kylie, I think, at least, Dell has made an attempt to get our attention and our interaction, which is great. Maybe some such designs from us will be initiated in future, what say dell_admin1? Such a scenario a possibility?

Ok, well yes they did make an attempt...

Way to go Dell :>

HEHEHEHE!!! I was thinking on the same lines kylie. Was about to do the same! You beat me to that. Nice one!

@kyliemanders - yes, we want to create a campaign for users to submit designs. There is an idea about that already on IdeaStorm, and it has a lot of votes. I'll keep everyone posted when we have it ready to go.
Any chance you'd voluntarily remove the picture from your comment so we can keep this one thread clean?

There you go, kylie, they are going to get us to design in future. :) that will be cool!

dell_admin1:

Should I vote if I'm not really the right target audience for this kind of machine at all. I do have an opinion of which of the two looks better to me - but I'm really not the kind of customer who would buy either - so I wonder if my vote would do you guys more good or more harm. Personally, I prefer computers to not attract attention to themselves (only enough of a LED to know it's on). I'm guessing the kind of buyers for these systems are more the types that want their computer to be very visible.

She looks pretty clean to me.

Clean, average and thus boring. If one goes so far as to make their computer a showpiece for everyone to look in then even the window through which it is viewed should be a work of art. This one just....isn't. The other choice is excellent. This would have been cooler if the XPS X was etched in the window.

Definitely go with the X logo. Looks a lot more classier than the window. Would have liked to see the whole XPS logo but it's a start.

better than no window, but a square window is kind of plain looking.

just take the XPS logo and flip into an vertical orientation so that the letters are stacked on top of each other.. something like:

X

P

S

but obvioulsy each letter would be the same font/style just like they are in the regulary XPS logo (short and wide) so that each letter would fit onto the panel and allow for maximum viewage into the case.

Way too plain.

Looks like something my idiot older bro would do in the garage! He's the king of no imaginationland....

Love the X! thanks for letting me vote - now all we need is a remote control to go with the system

I do rather this idea. It's much better than the X case. It seems to flashy. What would be great is if the WHOLE sidepannel would be see through and there would be a pair of those Corsair memory moduals with the lights, and a Cold Cathode on the side. That'll be wiked.

I like the X case better - with 1 additional window and a big red 'eye' on the front! :-)

Count me in as a "write-in vote" for a taller, larger window, rather than the smaller "X" or "rectangle" designs.

I admire Dell's guts to have outsiders opinions for the X.

If you think there should be a different design, why not post it here? :-)

Why just an 'X'? Make it a transparent X - P - S. It would look more stylish with the actual XPS branding rather than just a simple 'X' without any significance. Do not focus any light on the fan within the chassis as the "ON-OFF" effect from the reflected light would be harsh on the eyes especially in a dark room.

ISN'T THIS BETTER?

Yeah, I really like the vertical XPS idea. However, if I had to choose between the two designs, I'd go with the X. Though the window offers more view on the internals, it just isn't as stylish.

Yes, I think that's better. Consider submitting is a top-level idea.

cool. XPS - bold it for more glass - less metal - nice design.
jmxz
05/11/07
san2ssh - btw, how'd you do that? photoshop? some 3d rendering thing and you extracted some texture maps from the other designs?

jmxz, Believe it or not, I did it with MS Paint! Just some cut-copy-paste work.

I think it would be a good idea not to have a running vote counter because it can sway preference one side to the other based on popularity. Its just like in the classroom, if 85% of the classroom raises their hands 40% of the kids might of solely done so to conform. I think a more accurate opinion could be reached if you could only see the total number of votes after making a decision.

soooo, why is this still votable..... didn't this end 4 days ago? Declare the winner and build it so I can buy it this summer please.

I prefer this design over the "X" window personally:
a) The X blocks the view of the "XPS logo" inside the chassis
b) This concept DOESN'T contain the XPS logo on the outside chassis, but rather inside [very nice touch in my opinion]
c) When I see this logo and those red lights, the first thing that comes to mind is heart/blood. It feels as if I'm cloning humans, it makes me feel "powerful"

So, reg, which one's you? I'd say the one in the red. :)

I like but, why is there not a Silver, Red, blue, ect, and LED colors as well. A custom system needs a custom case, case oolors, LEDs, side panels should be interchangeable and [The XPS name says power]. You say we can have a system made to order and these should all be choices to make it our own.
