Extend offers like Linux pre-installation to the UK & Europe

7950 points posted to Dell, Linux by leftcase 05/03/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

First of all - well done Dell for listening to the people and making some brave decisions about the operating systems you provide your computers with.

Supplying pre-installed Linux (and XP instead of Vista for that matter) goes a good way towards giving customers what they want.

One thing that is slightly irritating however is that none of these offers are available outside of the US. Browsing through peoples comments, blogs and the Dell forums reveals that many people from the UK (for example), want the opportunity to get pre-installed Linux on their new Dell PCs.

The UK and Europe marketplace is not insignificant, and many people feel that you should extend your offer to this market too.

Please see Ideas In Action for additional information. Ubuntu Linux in other countries is coming soon.

Lots of duplicates of this idea around elsewhere too.

I did miss one aimed at this topic (sorry, first time on the site), but I think this suggestion is different from the one suggesting pre-installed Linux roll-out world-wide. I don't know that this would be financially viable for Dell in every market.

This website is a great tool, but indeed it needs some updates, like :
=> Ability to mark an idea as duplicate
=> Ability to delete an idea (outdated, duplicate or irrevelant)

As for now, it is our task to highlight the most important ideas by gathering the vote of the duplicate ideas in the most-rated duplicate...

Yeah it is completely just because the market should not be to close only in the United States.

The OEMs are the only ones with enough power to pressure the chip vendors to release their documentation!

Vendors: we don't want your source code and we don't want NDAs. All we want is the complete documentation of your hardware so we can build our own stable and maintainable opensource drivers!

If Dell wants to let its customers satisfied with its new Linux PCs offering, it MUST make vendors provide full and free (both in the sense of freedom - i.e. not under NDA - and in the sense of price) documentation. The rest (hardware support and opensource drivers) will come along.

Cast your vote for free hardware documentation! Dell's Linux PCs offering will be completely useless without proper hardware support...

Voted on two other threads like this one... I'd honestly buy a Dell laptop with Ubuntu if they were available in Argentina. I'll probably keep calling their sales line just to pester them about the issue. I'll be needing a laptop by December, it'd be great if it were preloaded with Linux.

I used to own a dell PC at home. I would seriously consider buying another dell PC if Ubuntu or fedora were offered on dell PCs in the UK.
Well done Dell for offering customers a real choice of OS.

Agree!
Doesn't the UK belong to Europe?
