Dell Disk Space | No More Fears Of Losing Your Data

210 points posted to Servers and Storage by thebittersea 05/05/07

In addition to storage space in your Dell, perhaps Dell should host an extended online storage system to let customers keep their important documents. This could eliminate customer's fear of losing their data.

  • Online space will match your Dell hard drive space
  • Full back-up or use it as additional storage
  • Pay for additional space

Why not use an online backup vendor?

Well, of course there are many alternatives.
But that's like getting your Toyota serviced by Ford dealership. It just feels good to have the same company service your hardware, software and data. :)

    Good comment. Thanks!

Why not buy one of those little sticks that plug into the usb thingy...

badblood, those things break and there's a limit as to how many times you can read/write to one of those usb thingies

Well you could buy two (they are rather inexpensive), or else copy your stuff onto one of those external drive what'smecallits.... or use one of those silver disk thingymebobs that spin around and look like shiny LPs...i have one on my computer and it seems to be satisfactory at backing up my data. Otherwise you could print everything, and place it a fire and flood proof safe....

And don't forget large multinational corporations also break - then the IRS will have all your data.

badblood. Good points about alternative medias and redundancy.
However, to truly address the problem, we need the big boys to help us out.

And, I think if IRS really wants your information, they will figure out a way to get it. :D

    Thank you!

This would be a great idea.
Match your harddrive with online storage.

We all know the cost of storage is close to zero now and when done right, this could be a GREAT Perk for Dell Customers.

There you go, cost to Dell is nothing.
This could draw in so many customers.
    If it is marketed correctly!

While I think this would be a good idea, it would be quite expensive on Dell's part. After all, if you get the same amount of space as your hard drive, you're essentially getting two hard drives. I think maybe just like 1 GB or so of space would be plenty. Word documents are like 25 kbs plus the actual text, and powerpoints are like 10 MBs tops. I've got like 200 GBs of files on my computer, but like 50 GBs are videos, and another 120 GBs are games and programs. There is probably about 100 Mbs of files that are irreplaceable; reports and the like. So, I think 1 GB, or even less would be plenty.

Encrypted, with a locally generated key! I code for a company which would not find it acceptable to have my data hosted somewhere remote unless it were encrypted by a locally generated key.

    Online backup, seems. weird.
imagine having a 200gb hard disk crammed with. videos and other stuff. that's a lot of data traffic you'd have.

I recommend setting up a RAID instead if you fear your hard disk might crash.
perhaps make a local backup of the most important files every so n then.

Well, given enough bandwidth, online backup is very practical indeed.

Does this mean that this idea is implemented?

Dell do have some offering of online backup, ie. 1GB or so.. But it is not realistic for current internet bandwidth, if everyone have a 155Mbps then it could b possible to back up you 250GB of hard disk of data.

Also by having a huge data storage and also dont forget the super fast internet connection will surely increase the cost of keeping things running at Dell

Question is, are you uwilling to pay more?!

"current internet bandwidth" - you know that this varies widely? I got 2 Mbps.
