Enable AHCI in Dell Notebook BIOS

590 points posted to Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Laptops by ldr 05/06/07

Latest Dell notebooks are based on ICH7M chipset and even have SATA hard drives with NCQ support. But, the option to enable ahci, and therefore to enable SATA NCQ is not available in Dell BIOSes (other brands give the option).

Having this option in Notebook BIOSes would allow a up to a 30% performance gain under Linux and Vista.

This is my only complaint with my Inspiron 6400. I dont understand because other brands offer the option to enable / disable AHCI.

I completely agree. This is a very important feature and its frustrating to not have the option to enable it !

I have an Inspiron 6400/E1505 and I would very much appreciate this option in its BIOS.

I really don't think Dell cares about this one. They've moved on to new models and they want us to move on too. But yes, I would love them to put a little time into this and release a new BIOS with AHCI support.

Hi,

Since it is not economically feasible for Dell, would it be possible, at least, to use an alternative solution, like a BIOS extender? I know it might sound silly, but I have read on other forums about users hacking the BIOS of a Sony Vaio and enabling by default the AHCI.
