Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this.

It's very futuristic looking. I like it, but I hope it doesn't scratch easily. Why include a black frame at all? Make it glass. I don't care how heavy it is.

Normally i just look at the screen, not the border around it. But people are easy to impress. So maybe its just great to pimp with...

consumers nowadays want to own a product with fabulous design; So Dell products need to be shiny, exclusive; I love the monitor in the picture.

All manufacturers now propose all kind of products with similar specifications, the real difference is only around the ergonomy and the design.

Hi,

Dell looks simply gr8. Sizzling Style.....wow. slim 'n' catchy. Good striking appearance indeed.

Looks like a regular TFT panel with perspex sheet in front and four leaf speakers.
The display controlls (lower right) don't need to be there at all.
Move along... nothing to see here ;-)

I wanted to promote, jmxz, but I demoted by accident - please forgive me for that. There is always something going on with my 4-year old Dell system...I shall be forced to upgrade soon.

No problem - I can't count how many unintended votes I have -
sometimes through clicking the wrong button
sometimes through the poster editing the Idea in a way that changes my position
sometimes through merges of similar ideas.
On the average it all seems to balance out, though.

It looks cool, but what really matters to me in monitors (Take note Dell) is the connectivity. I'll be getting a new PC soon with a TV Tuner. Therefore it doesn't make sense for me to have a separate TV. The problem is that most monitors don't have many inputs. I'd like to have a nice 24 inch monitor with good contrast, good response time and above all, inputs of all sorts. HDMI in particular, DVI-D, VGA, Component, Composite, S-Video, S/PDIF and Coaxial Digital audio input, maybe even SCART. Offering more inputs/ouputs in a monitor in my view adds the monitors value more than anything else. Once you have all that figured out, then you can start thinking about ''cooler'' looking designs.

petzymathuram, at least as far as I have looked, I haven't found a monitor with all of that, not from Dell, nor from any other high quality manufacturer. If you know of one, please let me know.

I hope someone from Dell is reading this. PLEASE! Be innovative. The reason people worship Apple is because they have beautiful designs and they actually release products that make people go wow! You'll make money and regain your market share with products like that.

You need to deploy more products that simply look great and make people happy inside. Then Dell will be known for more then cheap ugly PCs.

We have DNA sequencing and Mach 5 jets. Why not a beautiful screen and pc?

You’re right, there are definitely some valuable ideas on this thread and we’ve been following it. I work closely with Dell’s Experience Design display and imaging team. A lot of people on IdeaStorm have talked about reducing the clutter and we couldn’t agree more, so we are working on designs that blend technologies and reduce wires. In fact the consept talked about in this post uses display port technology that combines all of the necessary connections in a single cable to dramatically clean up the work space.

The Crystal Concept Display (shown above). In concept work like this, the team is developing solutions that can be introduced in the future products. Your input gives us a chance to see how on target our direction is, and redirect if necessary. So keep the ideas churning and stay tuned. It’s great to hear from you.

@hope_l: "I work closely with Dell’s Experience Design display and imaging team. "

COOL! It's very impressive how internally Dell seems to do _amazing_ design work (like this monitor), but what gets to production seems of lesser quality. It's almost as if there's some step in the process that filters out the good and keeps the bad :(.

Any chance a monitor even similar to this'll get sold anytime soon? [yeah, I know, you probably can't say].

Yuk.... Design is nice, but take a look at those nasty reflections. It has "I'm clueless" written all over it.

Dell should scrap this "true life" stuff, get rid of all the reflective screens, and add more serious matte screens. I don't know why Dell is making it so hard for any knowledgeable person to get a quality screen these days, other than the simple fact that most buyers don't know what they're doing and are drawn to shiny objects.

Hi Godzilla,

Theres nothing Yuk with Dell..............Be happy its improving a lot.............;)

Great design indeed. I like the idea of minimizing the number of wires. I am still counting two wires thought; the display port technology one and the power cable. I would like to only have a power cable. You should just send all signals over that one.

You can use homeplug technology to transport your information from the monitor to the computer. There is an idea that talks about this. Just plug in your keyboard and mouse into the monitor and you only have one wire.

You can even place your computer wherever you want. In that case it would be nice to be able to insert some storage media (dvd, SD etc.) into the monitor, so you do not have to walk to your computer in the garage. Add a remote sensor to the monitor and you can use it as a television as well.

Thanks for the response, but for this particular idea it's too little too late for me. Since the time I posted this Idea, I bought a high-end Samsung monitor. Sad thing is that I really like Dell hardware, and wanted a Dell monitor; but decided not to for reasons I outline on this other idea.

j.bandringa, If you look at the picture closely you will see only one cord, I believe the power and data cables are integrated together.

godzilla, True, reflections are an issue, but that matte finish reduces the viewing angle, dims the brightness and reduces the contrast, so there are trade offs either way. I'm not sure exactly why true-life is becoming the standard, but haven't CRT monitors and TV's been shiny for years?
