packing and presentation.

Even the high end laptop or printer of dell comes in an ugly brown carton without any mention of what is inside! Compare it with any other laptop in market, all others have colorful packs. Is it for cutting the cost? The customer should feel that he is buying a valued product, and it should show how it is delivered and presented.

Agreed. Say what you will about their hardware or software, but Apple shows how the out of box experience is done right.

I don't care if it is in an ugly brown box, the only people who see that is UPS, Me and my trash man. I don't think a pretty box seen by them is going to make them suddenly want a Dell. Now fit and finish on the actual product...that is where they need to concentrate.
perhaps a pretty box option could be available for and extra $10. I can't see it costing much more than that.

Simply b/c they're not sold on shelves. That being the case, what's the point of a dolled up box?

Now if Dell changes their business model to sell in retail outlets, then yes, they'd better doll up their packaging. I'm thinking glossy white outer cardboard for starters.

You want everyone in the neighborhood to know the FedEx guy just dumped a $1,500, 30-inch LCD on your front step?

I happen to like those brown boxes.

Keep the brown box, its in-conspicuous, the last thing i want is my entire neighborhood knowing what i brought. Besides, i am sure its a LOT cheaper to produce the brown ones than it is to produce the puzzle cube that apple packages the ipod in.

I've got an idea that I've thought about for a long time. Unfortunately I cannot compose coherent sentences today. Bear with me b/c in fact, I'm so pleased with the idea that I'm afraid to post an article on it. Anybody could just abscond with this one and that would be bad for the whole of the western hemisphere. If after reading this, could someone please delete this comment, seriously. For not much more than is currently being expended on foam cushioning and boxes, Dell could provide complete computer systems. Complete in the sense that the surge protector power strip is ready to go into the wall ten seconds after the "box" is opened.

Polyethylene foam comes in many densities and colors but no matter. It is not a "TACTILE MATERIAL". If Dell exclusively knew how to seamlessly and permanantly cover precisely engineered PE foam with bamboo, aspen wood, sisal fiber and other very cool, attractive, unusual, innovative, durable, resilient, and natural materials, a premium would be paid for the unheard of convenience of having a one piece indoor/outdoor mobile PC. The word for today is _____________. (hint: rubberadhesives)

I see that my comment makes no sense. HP is currently selling a Pavillion at WalMart that is about the size of a phonebook. The new monitors are light enough to be mounted on a omni-flexible stem. With standard keyboard, mouse, subwoofer and speakers (even printer) snugly and neatly nestled in the interior side of the "packaging"... all of the wires, cables and cords are concealled and protected. Fold it, affix shipping label and leave it on the doorstep or take it to the register.
