Offer AMD Processors with Ubuntu Linux!

1410 points posted to Desktops, Linux by krazzyj 05/25/07

Offer AMD processors with Ubuntu.

Today I tried to purchase an Ubuntu system, only to be stopped cold with an Intel ONLY system. Open you eyes and allow AMD cpu's with your Ubuntu systems.

Now that's cost effective.

I love AMD, and Dell should definitlly ship more AMD processors in the future. Unfortunally Intel is kicking AMD's butt right now, so the cries for AMD products are a lot quiter

Well, I don't care what's on Ubuntu systems, because I still don't want it, and this is why I promoted this idea. But on a Windows system, I don't want AMD, only Intel. If this idea concerned Windows and AMD, then I would have demoted it. But don't force us to use AMD if we want Intel. And keep Intel on XPS systems, because Intel always makes the best processors -- no wonder XPS always has them! A problem with Dell is that on Intel systyems, it offers only Intel, and on AMD systems, it offers only AMD. How about offering both at the same time?

Yes the point is Allow the customer to choose.

If the customer wants Intel with windows or linux let them have Intel!

If the customer wants AMD with windows or linux let them have AMD!

bennish and krazzyj: I agree with you. Most systems only have one processor, but we still should be able to choose what that one processor is.

My colleague and I were planning to buy UBUNTU powered laptops with AMD 64bit Processor. I disappointed as there were not any options at all in Dell. Ubuntu laptop comes only in one configuration. Dell, I hope you are listening to people's feedback. We want options for Ubuntu like there should be an option to choose Ubuntu in OS selections and also an option to choose AMD 64bit (etc) in Processor Selection. We don't like the idea of 1 configuration. It's as simple as that.

That would really cut back on cost. Ubuntu + AMD. I like the sound of that. :D

The problem here is, AMD Dell computers have ATI chipsets and ATI integrated graphics. ATI graphics support under Linux is still incredibly poor, and many features do not work. (For example, enabling fglrx (the non-free ATI driver) on a linux system will break suspend/hibernate support. It can also be quite the trick getting video playback to work. I think that in the near future, unless Dell decides to go with nvidia or (God forbid them) VIA chipsets, Ubuntu should only be available on Intel.
