Use Less Packaging Materials than Any Other Company

620 points posted to Environment by jerseyshore 06/05/07 **REVIEWED**

It may not be as exciting, but become the leader in using less packaging for every purchase made....less cardboard.....better packing.....and more

We have made huge strides in reducing the amount of packaging we send out with our products. For more details from todd_d, click here.

At least carboard is recyclable. Styrofoam, which some manufacturers unfortunately are still using, is not.

Well they need to ship them in something? What about if they charge you a recycle fee for the box, if you recycle it you get your fee back if you don't you can't get your fee back. That sounds super fair and is good for the environment! Like the old beer/coke bottle deposit idea. At the very least the fee can be used to build the Dell Recycling Center.

Less packaging might mean more PCs damaged in shipping.

I reckon you could use some cardboard engineering to replace the expanded foam components of the packaging. I work for a very large card manufacturing company and it's the sort of thing we can do. It would also be good of you could replace the foam they use for shipping monitors with something more sustainable like a calico bag.

I'm not bothered about the cardboard - but why the heck does every power lead need to come in it's own plastic bag? That seems extremely wasteful to me.

jerseyshore,

Thanks for the input. We hear more from our customers about our packaging then other other "green" subject, and thanks to them, we have made huge strides in reducing the amount of packaging we send out with our products.

Have a look at this Direct2Dell post about action we are taking to reduce our packaging:

Of course, we still have plenty to do along these lines, and we count on continued feedback from customers like you to let us know which areas require our attention.

Thanks again,
Todd Dwyer
