I wish Dell could incorporate Hot plug/Hot swap for eSATA drives in their BIOS. When you look on the internet many new external drives now have eSATA connections because it is so much faster than USB and Firewire. I just got the XPS 410 which has Intel P965 and 82801HR/HH/HO (ICH8R) chipset for a host controller and the Matrix Storage Manager. On the Intel website there should be hot swap capability on the Matrix Storage Technology website http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/matrixstorage_sb.htm http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imst/sb/cs-012308.htm.

For the 3 criteria listed, the first and third criteria have been satified: 1 Matrix Storage Manager is installed and 3 the ICH8R chipset supports hot swap. However the second criteria has not been satified. Dell does not show hot swap capability in its BIOS.

Hopefully Dell will upgrade its BIOS to incorporate this in the near future.

I have the same problem. Purchased an EZ-Swap EX external enclosure so that I could have a clean (read: no wires) back up platform, but now I think I will have to return it as there is no present way around the SATA hot swap problem.
